View Full Version : How Much Do You Weigh?

I read posts where some riders say,"I weigh 210 so I don't climb". Plenty of similar comments, not just here but most places in the forum.

So I'm just wondering how much we weigh? I can understand a 300 lb person not liking to climb but at 230-235 myself, it aint all that bad.:D

245 - Climbed Palomar Sunday morning. I am not the fastest, but that is my favorite ride. There is nothing more rewarding on a bike than getting to the top of a big climb.

I want to try Palomar some time. Maybe Torrey Pines, too. But that'll be in the future sometime. For now, I'm around 255 (sans lycra) and getting back into cycling after a mountain biking accident caused a shattered knee cap back in the late 90s. I like climbing, if it's a small hill or if there's a decent downhill lead-in, but otherwise, not so much.

On my first century, I felt like an idiot walking my bike a few feet (seriously--the legs were burning) up a hill at the Marine base (Camp Pendleton).

Palomar is a great ride. :) If you do Torrey Pines check out the park road. It's a little steeper but it's also shorter. It'll kick your butt! :)

I avoided scales for 12 years - last week I sneaked a peak and it was more than I had ever imagined myself weighing.

Maybe it's just me , but is Torrey Pines a big hill? I did the Amtrak century some years ago with some friends. We were warned about the BIG HILL. It was only about a hundred yards! I didn't even realize we had ridden over it!:D...I could be wrong, maybe 1/4 mile? Oh well, we got a popsickle at the top.:P

Palomar I've heard is a good climb but never done it. Similar to GMR which is about 15 minutes from where I live. So why drive 2 hours to Palomar?:p

I have no idea where SanMarocs is so asking anyways. Have you ever done GMR? I've heard Palomar is similar, about 21 mile climb, 5000 ft (maybe little more on Palomar). Did you do the entire climb or a section? I'm not real familiar but I think it's made of of different climbs

OK, Homey, gotta ask you! You've met me before, right? Well part of my idea to post this thread is that the guy with WHOM I ride my MTB said I wasn't as big as I was portrayed on the forums. He was shocked that my roadie was only a 58 cm. He mentioned that I was portryed as some big monster on the forums:eek:

Hmmm, I've always claimed 6'1 230 ish. I migth be 4 or 5 inches taller than he and 70 lbs heavier. So I gotta ask, do I look like a little guy in person?:p

I'm 360 and climbed almost 3600ft of climbing on tour... and yes....it was kicking my butt. Actually
it was beyond kicking my butt at some point on a 11-24 until i got the 12-34 and it was easier but
miles and miles of up hill still take a toll hahah..

I can't wait to get the rest of this weight off .....i keep wondering what kind of motor i could have
if riding at 360 now... keep wrestling with this doggone diet! I did a 12.1 mile time trial this year and pulled a 20.65 .....it's got me dreaming! hahah

I weigh 175 pounds. This is the perfect weight. It doesn't matter how tall you are, or how old you are, or what your body fat % is, or your waist size. 175 pounds, that's it.

It's hard to gauge someone's weight unless they say it or post a picture. Maybe there was one memorable post where you sounded like a monster... although 4-5 inches and 70 pounds is monster territory to me. You should have stepped on his toe.

Well whatta ya waiting for!....I did a few centuries with another rider (Bigkahunadad). He was a double century rider, got the California Triple Crown (3 doubles in a year) while riding at 230 lbs. Not a big deal but he started at 460 lbs. Lost his weight thru riding. No surgeries, just a passion for riding.

Yeah, you have the Porsche motor, just need the body!:D...Now knowing that you can, if you do more of those big elevation numbers, it wouldn't be long before you dropped a bunch!:thumb:

360 sounds like alot but how tall are you? I've known some guys at 300 that were not fat at all, 6'5 like WWF wrestlers.

Perhaps a sliver of my former self, but still have some remants that aren't helping me go up hills (thinking of what's left of my MOOBS)!!!

I've only lost about 35#, maybe 40# since starting to ride again, but definitely less "fluffy" (except for the MOOBS)....

Do I seem obsessed with my MOOBS?

6'2" 280, down from 325 since May

My weight loss has slowed down, mainly because I had the flu two weeks ago and then it turned into bronchitis. Just barely getting over that. I would say that most of my riding involves climbing.

The weight is just an excuse in that regard, though to be honest, losing weight would be about the only thing that would help me in my climbing (and riding at all at this point, since I can't generate enough excess power to get good speed on the rare "flats" I get to see) at this point. But generally, I notice people tend to want to find excuses to not try when it comes to climbing.

280-290 here depending on the day. But no chance to not like it, or I don't get to ride at all. And yes, I get that/read that from people much lighter than I am about climbing as well.

San Marcos is between Oceanside and Escondido. I have not done GMR, that is on my list, probably in the spring. I usually park at Harrah's casino and ride up south grade road. That is 13.5 miles up, around 4600 ft. If you continue to the observatory, it adds a few hundred feet more climbing but that part is not as steep. This is me on the way down Sunday.

6'2", 172.

At some point, the Clydesdale changed definitions on me and left me behind - I wasn't ready to go. It used to be that our triathlons and duathlons would define a clyde as being either over 6' or some sliding scale of height and weight. I went away from it for a while and then came back to find the 200-lb definition. The rules changed, but I didn't so here I am.

A lot of this isn't the weight but what it's made up of... I have been (past tense) a 210# 5'7" Athena with a bad knee and no lower body conditioning and little leg strength. Cardio-wise I was in decent shape from swimming. 15 months after getting back to bike riding, I'm still a slow climber but still gradually improving. Getting a nice new light bike didn't make me slower. :D

According to the pay-a-quarter scale this Saturday, 236 lbs, meaning I've lost about 50 lbs since I started riding a bicycle.

I'm 6'5 and 185. It's all relative. I suppose there are cyclists out there that I can beat on climbs, but not my 5'6 friend. No matter how skinny or strong I get I don't think I'll ever beat him on a climb. There's just some disadvantage in climbing to being taller, even if you do have low body fat. Kind of like a short guy will never make it in the NBA, no matter how talented he is.

Having said that, I don't avoid climbs and I find they are fun. Very difficult, but fun. I've always been very active in sports, however; but I was never good at endurance events.

Spud Webb played in the NBA for 13 years and he's only 5'6". (A vertical leap of 42" helps.)

That said; I'm 6'6", 225 pounds. I love to climb, and I love long distance rides... the 2 things us big tall guys are supposed to be bad at doing.

212 this morning. And I'll still kick your ass in the climbs. :p

The majority of midwest mountain biking is lots of rolling terrain with quick steep climbs. By preserving momentum and really stomping on the pedals, the climbs are actually where I do most of my passing in races.

It's also where I pull my most fiendish tricks. If I've got some skinny spinner stuck behind me on the single track, I'll just push a huge gear to the point of crawling up the hill and burn them out.

And when push gets to shove, I can run up hills faster than most of my competition can spin the bottom two or three gears on a MTB. :D

Just don't talk to me about the longer multi-mile climbs. I, uh.... gotta work on those some. ;)

Somewhere between 5'8 and 5'9 here as of this morning 228 down from 265 in May. In Central Illinois not so many climbs but everything is rolling hills, so it is nothing for a 20 mile ride to have a few 1000 feet of climbing. When I started i hated hills with a passion, even the smallest ones had me huffing and puffing when i got to the top and 4 miles seemed like forever. And now, hills have become much easier and I dare to say this...but I am actually starting to enjoy the climb hehe.
