Hello, Im NiceMustache, Im new to bike forums, but not new to forums. So I know my way around a thread branching ;)

I currently have 70's? schwinn varsity my dad bought as my high school graduation present. But I hit a pot hole, and need to aquire another bike....Got's a bent fork now.

Any suggestions on where to start? which bike to get? Make one out of an old road bike, or buy a new one? I have little bike knowledge-yet. But am open to learning!

for serious?

no one can tell you what bike to get. but, do these things:
1) spend a few weeks to a month reading this forum
2) use the search
3) hit up your local bike shops
4) ride the bikes, ask a lot of questions.

doing these things you'll:
a) learn a lot
b) see about 2 threads per day pop up exactly like this
c) ?
d) profit!

This is what I did, and recently decided on a Surly Steamroller. I wouldn't really recommend a conversion if you're a noob, it's probably better to grab a $300-400+ bike off the shelf and go from there.

I would just peruse this here message board, check out online retailers to see what they have available, go to your local bike shops and check out their merchandise (don't forget to take note of what brands they carry, as they will be able to order bikes even if they don't have the model you want), and most importantly, Sheldon Brown. If you have questions, either consult Sheldon or the search function here.

Local Bike Shops are going to be a life saver for you, and I promise that any extra you pay upfront will be saved in the long run.

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed/index.html will be your new bible.

Mercier Kilo TT, IRO Mark V, IRO Angus, Bianchi Pista, Surly Steamroller, Soma Rush, Windsor The Hour, Schwinn Madison, Specialized Langster. Did i miss any? read SS/FG threads. browse through velospace. visit some bike shops. sleep. repeat. Then when you're ready, choose one and enjoy.

I say buy a $50 beater and deliver newspaper. Then do research for your FG bike. Why rush it?

+1 I would not suggest rushing into anything, take time to do your research thourougly and know your stuff before you start dropping dollars. I sure as hell wish I had when I first got into FG.

How many papers do you deliver? I used to deliver papers on my bike (Washington Post) and with a bag and baskets, I could barely handle the bike (stopping, steering, climbing hills) and I had brakes and a 5 speed derailleur... this post seems a bit fishy.

jtgotsjets
11-04-09, 06:52 AM
if you need a bike by tomorrow, you have basically one option.

go to your ****ing bike shop and buy a bike.

the internet cannot help you. we don't know what kind of bikes are available to you locally. we can suggest bikes and components all day, but if you need a bike tomorrow and your bike shop doesn't have what we suggested in stock, it does no good.
craigslist is basically a waiting game and also of essentially no use to you.

Well I woke up early, went to some garage sales and managed to find an old 3 rensho track bike. The tires are dry-rotted but it should work for now until I get a better bike.

I have been looking at this site http://www.republicbike.com/

You can get your whole bike color cordinated, and thats really what Im after. I might just sell my junk bike I picked up at a garage sale on ebay to fund for that bike.

whitekimchee
11-04-09, 11:59 AM
and how much did you pay for this 3 rensho?

dza
11-04-09, 12:10 PM
no way anyone sells a 3rensho at a garage sale (esp for $400 or less, complete). no way anyone sells a 3rensho to 'upgrade' to a republic. the op is having fun w/ us.

Brian

Eight American dollars and sixty-three pesos.

when you're ready to upgrade to that republic bike, please sell me the 3rensho.

NiceMustache
11-04-09, 12:30 PM
It was 40 dollars, but I guess you get what you pay for. Its not as flashy as those republics.

I rode it down to 7 11 for a polish sausage today.

Next step is DIY-ing some thing for news papers

ANY IDEAS!!!!?!?!?!?!?!

I will be taking trade-offers for old-retro chrome bmx bikes with quill stems, and/or polish sausage and/or pork franks.

P.s don't try offering me your typical run of the mill hot dogs. I only eat the good stuff

Just buy a new fork for your varsity and a fixed wheel, if it was a graduation gift it would have sentimental value to me, so i'd just convert that in to a fixed gear... but thats just me.

FYI he only cares for the looks. Take the Republic Bikes he's so keen to get one person to say yes and he'll grab it. If you want a Republic bike get it. But if you want something that'll last long and will get you good bang for your buck. Wait it out order something from BD or check your craigslist religiously

I think he said he picked up a 3rensho so I think that this thread has been endeD?

Way to go man, you started a which bike thread, and now the back cover of the book can be closed.

And they all lived happily ever after- the end.

FYI he's a fictitious character in a fictitious scenario invented to try and piss people off.

Fairly lame that he wasted the time of people who out of their own goodwill tried to help him, but even lamer that this is the best use he can come up with for his time

Do you have any friends with fixies? Ride theirs and see if you even like the concept of a fixie (you can't idle your feet while peddling if you didn't know already) and best of all I'm pretty sure they would have quite a bit of useful info for you to use....

If you don't have any friends (rofl)/friends with fixies there's always your local bike shop.
