Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I like how the example image for "reference" is a medium sized, low-res web picture. If you're planning on printing your "book" on anything besides your parent's inkjet you're going to want images that are at least 200ppi.

300DPI is usually the standard.
I think his reference image was for composition and content, not size.

dpi is printer resolution, i was talking about images so i used the proper unit - ppi

to the OP : i disagree with you counting on other people's work and creativity to publish a book you will make money from. All the more so since the targeted readers for this book are the same you would have taken pictures from.

You may be right, but the fact that he didn't specify a minimum resolution is a bad sign as far as I'm concerned.
However, I hope he really publishes his book, it sells like hotcakes, he makes a ton of money, and puts the final nail in the coffin of this whole hipster-fixie nonsense.

There is a moderator on this site that works at a postal sorting facility. When a member was being harassed by someone that is clearly unbalanced, another moderator made a foil hat, and had it sent through that sorting facility. No return address, and hundreds of fingerprints.

I think the OP should really be hiring a photographer and finding people who want to pose in the pictures rather than relying on internet forums to compile a library of poorly taken shoddy looking pictures and assume publishers will be interested. you have a real concept here, its a good coffee table book, but your execution needs work. you may have enough to make a pitch to a company but you really need to do much more work to actually get this done..

I refuse to be in your dumb book.
I suggest you visit other fixed gear forums if you want to get more info about the culture. This forum isn't really "hip" and the majority here are anti-everything and bunch of elitists.

Seems to be quite true. What other forums did you post in?

Dumb
Isn't fixed gear "culture" pretty much about what you buy? Why are people surprised that someone is trying to make a buck off a culture of naked consumerism? I mean really, people.

I agree. This is mostly a photography project, and does have some potential, but you need a unifying vision (read single photographer) to make the concept work. The bikes already portray how the riders see themselves, so a picture by the rider of his/herself is merely ego with no perspective. We already have FGG and Velospace for that. You need to do the legwork to craft some sort of narrative
Think about it this way: Now you have an excuse to travel a lot, ride bikes, and enjoy the culture

I think a kind of "page per rider" format would be cool. a quick headshot of the rider off the bike, the bike and a blurb about the rider(occupation hobbies aside from cycling) NOT the bike, and I would stray from using an excessive amount of people who use their bike for their job, you don't want 70 pages of bike messengers and tech specs about their parts... no one really cares about that **** outside of these forums.

Fun to read that this post stirred up a discussion, If my english is a bit wrong sometimes can be that im from sweden and its not my native tongue. Thanks for the constructive critisism that can help! Im a graphic design student who does this as a side project besides the studies just becouse it would be a fun thing to do.
The thing i thought of by not using a single photographer is that the images will be diffrent in every photography and to balance that up use a layout that still makes it look solid. I have an image in my head that this could be a great project. I,ve posted this on alot of forum and blogs and i got alot of good response. The picture need to be atleast 3800x2500 px
in a few days i can give those who are a bit interested and taste of what it could look like.
Take care people

Urbanvelo does this. In practice it is boring as hell

Why don't you go solicit people on http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/ Find bikes/pics you like and contact the owners for permission to use them.

What comes to mind are the really lame coffee table-type books about "Radical Skateboarding!!!" that were around when I was a kid. My friends and I who skated loved making fun of those silly books.
Some years ago, a woman with a huge camera approached me on the street in Boston, asking me to allow her to take some photos and get some info and a short statement from me for some book about dreadlocks. It seemed legit and I do remember seeing the actual book in a bookstore once it came out. At any rate, I said no.

Does anyone honestly even need to point out the sheer ridiculousness of people who have been part of a sub group for what; a few months, calling someone elses contribution to that subgroup inauthentic?
"haha, did you see that lame-o with the book trying to capitalize on our culture man? I've seen a lot of dudes like that in my time man, I've been riding all the way back since June"

Seriously? A book about dreads?
Totally off-topic, I work with a Jamaican girl who says she's never smoked any herb. Crazy talk.

11-04-09, 06:41 PM
I wasn't really calling the dude out saying that whatever contribution he's making isn't "authentic", I was just pointing out how laughable a book like this may end up being...just like those books about skating were back in the early 80s.
Besides, just because I ride a bike (or have dreads, skate, listen to old hardcore, etc.) doesn't mean I need to be a part of any particular "sub-culture", let alone somehow feel I actually own it.
OP - Write a book about whatever you want. Hopefully it will offend all the right people.

Trying to get people on SSFG to post a picture of anything other than lolcats or something else totally unrelated? Hah! You'd be fighting an upward battle if you were merely asking a question!
Another idea shot down on SSFG!

Is that because you are shy?
Scrodzilla
11-04-09, 07:06 PM
I wouldn't say I'm shy. I just felt better about politely saying "no thanks" than taking part in documenting a "movement" (as the woman put it). I had my good reasons for dreading my hair back when I started but at the end of the day, it's just hair.
I don't consider my bike a "fashion statement" either.
Hey guys I have an idea
You do all the work
I'll take it from there
