Mountain Biking - Trek 4300 disc brake conversion

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi everyone, new here to the forums and am looking for a little guidance. My bike is a 2001-2002 Trek 4300 and I'm looking to add disc brakes. I know my fork has disc mounts, but does the rear of my frame have mounts too? If it does, would a disc adapter for IS mount frames work, or is there some other adapter I can use? Or am I S.O.L and can't run a rear disk with this frame?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Nick
Those holes in the picture are not caliper mounts.
As for how you'd go about adding a mount, I don't know. Chances are you may not be able to.
Yikes, I really hope there's a way to mount a rear caliper. It doesn't make sense to me to have disc mounts on the fork but not the frame. Thanks for the reply, though.
Would something like this work? http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BR708C15-Hayes+Adapter+-+74Mm+For+6+Rotors.aspx

All suspension forks have disc mounts. On the older 4300's they did not have a rear disc mount. The newer 4300's come with disc mounts and cantilever mounts. Adding a mount could be problematic. Better to buy a different frame and move your parts over.

Brake Therapy and AtoZ Components make adapters for frames without rear disc caliper mounts. Don't know if either will work with your frame. You'll have to do some research.
Nick, you're in luck.
A2Z makes an adaptor that mounts a 51mm I.S. to a non-disc frame.

He's got one...I think it was in the 'hood of $25 or so. Works great though.
You have inspired me, Ed. I looked over the Brake Therapy adapter again and I think I'm going to make my own for the Trek HT. I found an outfit that sells 1/2" 6061 radius and tie rods, 7 - 16", in ¼" increments and 5/16" aluminum Heim ends for reasonable. I'll just need to fab the hub-to-Hayes-adapter piece out of some billet and bolt it all together with stainless hardware. New winter project.

I'm looking forward to seeing that.

Your dropout will accept a Trek adapter to disc brake. I think the part# was 210648.

Damn, didn't see that. You already had that one covered!
It's all good. Ed just created the thread yesterday, I added to it and stuck it last night (I lucked onto that Trek adapter when I was creating my post). Kudos again to Ed for taking the initiative.

Yeah, that's the CF Treks made between '05 and '08. During that time, they were using sub-par fibers...

Yes, thanks to Ed, Doug, too!
iI think you local trek dealer has that part for about 15.00
Thanks for that link, chelboed. Just ordered one. Way better than buying a new frame (for now) :)
I feel...helpful.:notamused:
I don't like it.
You are all jerks and disc brakes are for wannabe's and V-Brakes live forever!
