I live in DC and ride in and around the Metro area. I aspire to be a lifestyle cyclist. My goal is to reduce my commuter footprint by 50% over the entire year. In my third year of bike commuting, I am now at 35% with over 1000 commuter miles in 2009, all on my 2007 Novara Buzz. Bad weather, darkness, and family obligations have been the main challenges to bike commuting year round. Road work on Bradley Blvd just adds to the enjoyment.
I also aspire to compete in triathlons, so I recently found a gently used 2005 Bianchi San Mateo on Craigslist. It adds an entirely new dimension to cycling, with the only downside finding enough open road and daylight to really open her up.
I can remember every bike I've ever ridden, though most of the earlier ones were of the Huffy or AMF variety. I once had a Bridgestone 10-speed when I was in high school in Japan. In retrospect it was too big for me, but that was a really fast bike.
But as much as I love swimming, cycling, and running, it simply keeps me in shape for when I can go surfing- preferably someplace warm like Hawaii or Costa Rica, though surfing Ireland and Maine was certainly exotic by those standards... hope to see everyone on the road, just - please - dim your high beams at night!
