I try to remove all threads, and other foreign matter from my axles prior to installation.
Seriously - what are you looking for on axles?

the last cart type thing I made didn't have the best solution. I called it the beach buddy and basically it was a 4 wheeled wooden frame with big plastic wheels that carried a big plastic box for a 10 mile hike on the beach to carry photo gear. the axles were just rods that went through the wooden frame and were fastened with washers and hose clamps on the ends. It was kinda noisy but worked great!
I've seen plenty of picture of trailer hitches but not much in the way of how to fasten wheels to the trailer. If I make a trailer I'm not sure what wheels I would use - I seem to have plenty of extra front wheels kicking around so how might I rig axles that would utilize the cones and bearings in these wheels?

There are any number of photos that show how to mount a standard front wheel to a trailer using forks or pair of dropouts made from angle iron. If you are looking for a single sided mount, stay away from the standard rear axle as it is just not strong enough. Instead, I suggest you look for wheelchair hubs that are 12mm or 1/2" OR the 14mm BMX axles. All these can be easily mounted using at least 3/8" thick steel plates and thicker depending on the required load. If you're not sure how to do this, the Atomic Zombie website has some tricycle builds that show how to mount a 14mm BMX axles single sided.
