Cyclocross - mavic wheels worn after 8 or so races

My mavic ksyrium elites rims have been worn out. I have had the wheels since september- about 8 races and 8 practices. The guys at work(shop) say it will not be warrantied as they will consider it wear and tear, as some of them have had similiar issues. Anyone here had something like that happen, and was able to get them replaced/taken care of?

So you wore out the braking surface from riding in mud and sand? I'm afraid you're probably SOOL unless you can claim some sort of manufacturing defect.

Are they totally unrideable? Or just worn past some sort of indicator strip?

Do you have the option of taking them to a small claims court? Ask them to put in writing that they consider the damage to be wear and tear, acknowledging the period you owned the bike for. Then take them to court. Wear and tear has to occur at a reasonable rate. Unless there are special circumstances - eg these rims are not sold as suitable for cross - then you should have no problem.

No rims are "suitable" for deliberately and repeatedly riding through mud and sand.

Wearing out gear is part of cross, for better or for worse.

And of all companies I would not expect mavic to go out of their way for customer service. They are always a pain to deal with. If it was sram on the other hand they would damn near send out a whole new bike for ya.

I would just order a replacement rim, lace it up, sell the wheels and build a normal spoked wheel so replacement rims are much cheaper. If you really like wheel systems though Id check out shimano's wheels or something from DT. Both have an amazing product out right now and will without a doubt stand behind their product.

I can't believe you can wear out wheels in 16 rides. Can you describe what you mean by wear out? I've got wheels going on 4 years of hard practice and they have plenty of life in them, granted I don't train in any sand which is definitely the worst for bikes but still.

Bummer Scott. If you rode slower, like I do, then brake wear is not so much an issue. My Roubaix Expert came with Elites and after 14,000 road miles they are still in excellent condition. It is hard to believe that 16 cross rides would cause that much damage even with the occasional sand pit. I've been in 1/2 the races you have done, plus the practice at my house and in Medina. There wasn't any sand at most at those rides.

Did the wheels come with your new cross bike? If so, maybe Specialized should be involved since they paired them together.

I find it hard to believe that with 16 rides you wore out your rims. Unless you were braking with so much stuff embedded in the pads.
