Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bontrager select track wheels v.s. mavic cxp 22

I am upgrading my fixed gear and i bought last years model of the trek T1 from my lbs. Right now on my fixed gear i have mavic cxp 22 rims on formula hubs. the T1 comes with Bontrager select track wheels. I am going to sell one of the wheel sets. which wheel set is better?

post a picture. most likely, the mavic cxp's will be a better choice to keep.

I have CXPs to Formulas and they work fine and weigh very close(maybe less)than the bontragers.If you wanna sell a set you will get more for the bontragers.Also the Mavic/Formulas are probably easier(less costly)to service.

I race track on a T1 and used the stock Bonty Select wheels as training wheels a couple of times (race on Reflex/Dura-Ace tubulars). They were flexy and not particularly lightweight. I ended up swapping for the CXP22/Formula wheelset on another bike. The CXP22/Formulas are much stiffer and feel faster. Having ridden both in a controlled environment (velodrome), I recommend the CXP22's. Assuming yours are in good shape, sell the Bontrager wheels. You can also buy Phil Wood bearings for the Formula hubs for about 6 bucks a piece.

I would agree with those saying to keep the Formula/Mavic combo.
I had the select road wheels and I was surprised how much lighter ultegra/sun rims combo was, even with 10 or 12 more spokes per. That ish was flexy and I am not that strong.

Would be interested to know which of your wheel sets is lighter though.

I've got a set of Formulas/CXP-22's on one of my bikes and it's a great wheelset.

Never got a change to weight the Select wheels, but holding both wheelsets, they were pretty darn close in total weight. However, the weight was definitely biased towards the rear wheel on the Selects, while the CXP22/Formulas front/rear were pretty close to the same weight.

thanks so much for all your input. I actually don't have the bike yet, but i should in a couple of days(its on order) I just wanted to know what i was going to do before i had it. It looks like i am just going to go with what my first thought was, which is to sell the bontrager selects. The cxp 22/formula hubs were my first and only wheel set,they have served me well for the past 3.5 years. so far i have only had to have them trued once(recently) and it wasn't even that much. so they are damn good for the money(only 150)

I know this may be a dumb question, but does anyone have any estimates on how much the Bontrager select track wheel set is worth? I'll most likely end up selling them on ebay and i want to make sure i am not getting too little for them.

I have sugino rd crank set on my bike right now, i assume they are better then then Bontrager Race crankset that comes on the t1, am i correct in that belief, do you think?

same spoke count on both wheel sets?

I have the bontrager select paired spoke wheels, they look much light than they actually is.

there's some breaking issue with the paired spoke design, maybe the rider was too heavy/rough on it, maybe it's not.

The cranks are a toss-up. I rode my T1 with the stock cranks exactly once, again at the velodrome. The cranks were plenty stiff and smooth. I've heard reports of the Bontrager track cranks breaking, but they seemed fine to me. You could do worse than the stock cranks or your RD's.

The 2010 T1 comes with standard-spoked wheels and FSA cranks. I assume you're getting a 2009 red T1 right? The paired-spoke Select wheels from the 2009 and before T1's is what I've been talking about this whole thread.

I'd take great pictures of the Selects and sell them no reserve and starting at $1. If you set a reserve and it isn't met, you pay eBay for the privilege of keeping your wheels.

Since you've gotten a forum to diss the Selects, don't expect them to be worth very much. If someone Googles your wheels, expect this page to pop right up.

I would keep them for a future project bike. Or in case you taco one of the Mavics. The Selects aren't nearly so bad as others have said. The important thing for all wheels is proper spoke tension.

I never said the Bontys were terrible, just that the CXP22/Formulas were probably a little better. IMO though, (when tensioned properly and maintained) your basic CXP22/Formula/DT wheelset is the best value in a wheelset for fg/ss you can buy. I have a set that are 4 years old and have been on ss street bikes, raced cross for a season, road/raced track for a bit, and are now on my commuter. Spectacular wheels.

I ended up putting my Selects on my old IRO frame and selling the bike to a dude I'm sure enjoys the bike.

I sold mine for $260 on CL with tires/tubes/freewheel/cog/lockring

One [fairly important] thing: When you get the bike, the freewheel threads on the bonty wheelset will have a thread protector/saver on them. I kept mine and it's been pretty convenient. I suppose it doesn't serve much function, but I haven't seen one anywhere else, and it looks good.

That's the closest concession to fashion you'll ever hear out of me.
