Tell your wife that you are just doing your part to help people by providing a vehicle for their personal health and recycling at the same time.;)
When my wife tells me that I have too many bikes I explain to her the I consider bicycles as "shoes" since they are attached to my feet. I then follow up and ask her how many shoes she has.:innocent:
You could be gambling, drinking, running around with other women, buy expensive sports cars, etc. I'd gently suggest your wife is jealous that you have a passion in addition to your passion for her. :)

If you were piling up bicycles by the dozens in your home to the point where you couldn't get in and out of the house then yes, it would be a sickness. But since you fix them and sell them (and sometimes at a profit) then what you have is a hobby. So be sure you explain to her it is a hobby.
And, if you have a hobby which brings in income, then you are one of the few lucky hobbyists out there.

Start collecting hiking gear from CL, sales, etc. Go on a few day hikes. Maybe do an overnighter. Read some hiking stories. Add this site to your favorites: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4805859/k.BFA3/Home.htm
Buy this book, read it, leaving it around the house http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Rediscovering-Appalachian-Official/dp/0767902521
Start talking about hiking the AT when you retire (if you're already retired this could backfire). Let it slip that it's a 5-7 month hike (if your marriage ain't so great it could also backfire here). Then drop the big one and tell her you're thinking about taking a leave of absence from work (or quitting, whatever), you just have to figure out the financial part.
If she's appropriately freaked out at this point, find a sweet deal of a bike on CL, act really excited about it, and tell her the guy is willing to trade the bike for the hiking gear.
Hi, my name is Jim. I'm a bikeaholic. I take them one day at a time. :)

Rescuing orphaned and neglected bikes is a noble cause. How can such compassion be a vice?:)

Obsessive behavior comes in all flavors. The OP is mad about bikes. Is it a sickness? Only if the obsession interferes with other aspects of life to the point that others begin noticing. Since the OP's significant other HAS noticed, maybe it is an issue. The money that the OP makes on his bikes is NOT the issue. The time and obsessiveness with which the OP pursues bikes is.

You are definitely a very sick person. You should pack up all your bikes and send them to me at once! You're welcome.

I must confess that going to the local bike shop has created a bike splurging disorder..! Have bought 6 brand new bikes all within the last 14 months to include a 2009 Trek Equinox 9.9SSL and a Trek Madone 6.9 Pro Red. Both of those purchased within the last 2 months..

Do not discuss your potential liability exposure with her. She'll make you stop. bk
You are not sick, keep telling yourself that.........I agree with those who say you are doing the economy a favor by saving bikes and maybe even your sanity by keeping busy with something that is productive. Also agree that if the wife is wondering...a conversation or continuing conversation is in orde.r.......
Whoaaaaaaa, I had two read that twice to make sure I didn't write it! It sounds like me a couple of years ago..... Well, here is what you do to help her out with this belief.

Hey, HVAC59 ... that is one tidy shop.
Please don't show it to my wife ... she might come to expect the impossible in shop cleanliness.

Sounds like me a few years back. I must have brought 5 or 6 back from the grave or built up from parts or destitute bikes for friends at cost in the hope I'd con them into some group rides. The barstids never took them out more than once each and now they sit languishing in their basements or garages.... ungrateful swine they are...... :D
The rest I fixed up for me, rode them a while then sold them as others came in and I needed the room.
As someone above said, they aren't filling the house. You're able to fix them then let them go. That's just some fun tinkering time in the shop. And that's a GOOD thing. It's healthy in a lot of ways and is far better than sitting in front of the idiot box with a lobotomized stare on your face.
As a side benifit my own non profit research has shown me to my own satisfaction that I don't age while in my shop. Time is suspended and normal aging only resumes when I cross over the threshold again. I figure that if I could put my bed, stove and beer fridge out there the only time the clock would start again is when I come out for supplies...

The problem I have is that I have more shoes than she has too. And more Oakleys, more tank tops, more briefs, more cars, more brains, (oopss), more Parker Pens, more pistols, more rifles, more ammo, more almost everything. She has more books.
