Texas - Any Relaxed/Vintage rides in Irving/ DFW?

I live in Irving and there is just about 0 bicycle activity. Sure there are groups on newer bikes, But are there other guys that ride older bikes that just want a good 20-40 mile cruise?

I'm over in Euless and be glad to ride with you, and all I ride is vintage. It's funny because I was going to post the same thing. What bike/bikes do you ride? Drop me a line and we can work out a time.

Relaxed rides in Dallas -

Monday Night mash (single speed every Monday night at Mockingbird Station)
Critical Mass (Last Friday of each month in downtown Dallas)
Anything put on by Bike Friendly Oak Cliff (sporadic and they tend to begin in downtown Dallas)

These are all rides at a conversation speed. You'll see lots of vintage and whacked out bikes there, you'll also see a few high tech, modern ones too.

Yes there is an active Vintage group in DFW area. David Cheakas of SouthWest Frameworks puts
on a relaxed vintage rides twice a year. A bunch of us get together from time to time for a leisurely
jaunt from RBM richardson to white rock and back (about 30 miles).

I bet you could go to a thrift store or Goodwill that would have tweed jacket or vest that would work.
I have a '72 Dawes Galaxy would work for this, too bad I have to work.

Discovered that proper tweed apparel either involves lots of money or ingenuity. I discovered that if you want to wear clothes that went completely out of style 80 years ago, you should take up golf. And actually, golf stuff would work for this if you already had it.

And I found there have been numerous "Tweed Rides" around the world, this is not a first.

The "How to make your own" approach sounds promising, except I can't hardly walk into a goodwill store and find anything that fits in the first place.

The Italian knickers look like they might be the ticket.

I actually have some european wool pants in the closet. The problem is that armies make soldiers fit the pants, not the other way around, so you don't find military surplus clothing for fat people. The pants I've got are about a 38" waist, I'm about a 40" right now. Give me a year or two and I might fit in them again.

Another issue is the weather. This time of year at 3:30 in the afternoon, it could be 80 degrees or 30 degrees with a hard wind. Sure as I planned on showing up in wool pants and coat, it'd be an 80 degree day. We shall see.

Wow. Hosting a whimiscal costume ride on the 46th anniversary of the assassination of an American president, starting from the assassination location. Who thought that was in good taste? Or am I just being old school?

It's probably no more distasteful than there being a Sixth Floor Museum that is more about glamorizing Lee Harvey Oswald and puffing up conspiracy theories than honoring JFK.

Actually, I hadn't made the connection on the date, and not sure how much of a connection there is. For example, the last Critical Mass ride started at the JFK cenotaph, but had nothing whatever to do with JFK or the cenotaph, it was just a place to meet (they actually met between the cenotaph and the old red courthouse). BFOC has done historical rides visiting places of associated with JFK's assassination, places associated with Bonnie and Clyde, etc., so I would assume they were aware of the significance of the date. But reading on the websites, I don't find any mention of that. They do mention that they moved it later in the afternoon so it wouldn't be at the same time as the Cowboys game.

Googling around a bit, I find that there's evidently not any official observance going on there. And for that matter, if there was an official obvservance of his death, you wouldn't necessarily have it at the place where he was shot. I find a newspaper article from a couple of years ago bemoaning the circus-type atmosphere there on the 40th anniversary of his death. I would think that would be much less so on the 46th, and much less so later in the afternoon. I've lived in this area off and on for 25 years, and never heard of anyone going down to the grassy knoll specifically because it was Nov. 22, though I suppose some might. I rode my bike past there Sunday, and they had the normal people standing in the street taking pictures and stuff like every other day.

I haven't decided for sure to go to this, but if I do, there is a fair chance that I'd be the oldest one there. I was three years old when JFK was killed, so the event is not exactly memorable to me. I would think the best reason not to have it there and then would be if there was any substantial crowd of other people there getting in the way.

I've been through the 6th Floor Museum, and actually thought it was pretty well done- I didn't see it as glamorizing Oswald or puffing up conspiracy theories. It's a museum of an event, not to honor JFK, and it does a good job at that.

Having not been there myself, I will defer to your judgment. I was basing my comments strictly on the vibe I've picked up from it. I wish I could point at a something that gave me that impression, but I'm not even sure what it was from.

Made it to the Tweed Ride. That was a lot of fun. There weren't many people there for anything related to JFK, so that worked out okay. A great turnout for the ride, I think the website showed they had a 130 confirmed to be there. One guy was on a penny-farthing, I actually saw another Worksman bike being ridden besides mine, saw a tweed swing bike, even. Had two different people on the Dart train ask "Are you down for the Tweed Ride?", so I guess word had gotten out about it.

Several of the local bike bloggers plan to be there. I can almost take credit for the idea of a denim ride; I called it last summer but never acted on it. The Bike Denton people referred to that post on Rat Trap Press blog in their announcement.
