I run mountain bike pedals on my tandem. The stoker finds the M505 pedals easier to clip out of than our A520's and as a captain I really want a double-sided pedal, but I suspect these were bottom-of-the-line when available. Other than the weight advantage can someone comment on the pros/cons of the various double-sided SPDs (M540, M520, M770, M970)? The 540 and 770 show as 350g/pair, the 970 as 325g/pair. Shimano doesn't list a weight for the 520 which are no doubt heavier. Are there durability differences? Do the more expensive variants have smoother mechanics?

I can't comment too much on the differences among the different double-sided SPDs, but I can say that the listed weight for A520's is 330g. If you're interested in weights, you can find even more listings (and actual weights) at http://weightweenies.starbike.com/listings/components.php?type=pedals.

I have the 540 and the XTR (970 I guess). They seem to work the same for me. I've used the 540s for 2 years and the XTR for 6 months. No issues with either for me.

The 540s are most of the performance of the 970s at much less cost, and a weight penalty you'll only notice on the scale.
