i am wanting to upgrade my rig to 9 speed

i currently have an 8 speed cassette on a lx hub which is quite old, ie before 9 speed became widespread.

will the cassette fit?

i will try to upload a picture of the hub for reference but its the gun metal grey one with no disc mount

any help is appreciated

I think all Shimano 8, 9, & 10 speed cassette freehub bodies are intercompatible. At least this is true w/ their road bike components.

Yes, it will fit. Tinker is correct that 8, 9, and 10 speed Shimano (and SRAM) cassettes all fit on the same freehubs.

It will fit, of course you will need 9-speed shifters and chain.

Some of the freehubs from the 8-speed era were not compact (HyperDrive-C -- see http://tiny.cc/ZIazu ). Those freehubs won't fit a cassette that starts with an 11T without some tweaking.

Is this a touring rig? It's a lot easier to come across a chain that will fit an 8sp when you're out of the way in some small town. You can get a 12-32 in 8sp (your choice of really nice, or really cheap)

but yes, as mentioned it is a direct swap.

Try shrinking the photos next time...

In any case, a Deore LX (FH-M570) is relatively recent. I've put 9-speed cassettes on this hub without an issue. You won't have a problem.

Put it together and go ride.
