Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So the guys at the shop tell me a trainer won't work with the spacing on my old steel bike, and besides I'd be overspinning on a fixie anyway. They told me to get rollers but I'm reticent to do it. I'll be able to afford a geared road bike when the season comes around in spring but I can't get it now+trainer. I want better endurance and speed in the spring and I'm committing to do the Bike Across Kansas ride in June so I want to be training now. I know the fixie people will say not to baby out and keep riding through winter but that's stop and go commuting and I don't think I want to put in a lot of training miles on the roads in January. What do you guys think? Go running and do squats? I went running the other day and it beat me up aerobically but didn't hit my muscles very hard. What should I do between now and spring training?

Try another shop, steel framed bikes and trainers do mix without problems. Just dial up the resistance on the trainer for more resistance, fixie or not. I only have steel frames so I know you'll be fine.

+1 on the stairs! The more the merrier. In college we used to run either the 11 story math building or the 20+ dorms. No hands, just do a speed skating stance and go. Hmmmm, I wonder if Frunkin does these same stairs at UWM?

Rollers? Great for pack racers because it teaches you to ride a straight line. Not much resistance though.

Do whatever you want between now and spring ... mix it up, keep it interesting. Unless you've just landed a Pro contract just have fun!
