Do many people ride without underwear? Something I heard in the bike shop. I tried it. Didn't seem to bother me... just wondering. :o

yes. that is the way bike shorts are meant to be worn.
I don't wear underwear while riding a bike with bike shorts on and I usually don't ride a bike without bike shorts. Here is the best quote I have read concerning this subject when I was researching the underwear issue a while back. Thanks Underwear Nazi, for showing me the light.
Should one wear underwear under one's bicycle shorts?
In a word: no.
In a lot more words: no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!
Am I making myself clear?
Bicycle shorts are designed to be worn next to the skin. Underwear under bike shorts is unhygenic, unsightly and unsafe. Wearing underwear under padded lycra shorts is like riding with your shorts full of ground glass. It is a one way ticket to chafesville. Don't do it!
Remember the Underwear Nazi manifesto: No underwear under bike shorts for any reason ever. No Excuses.
Got it? Good.

Oh, and did I happen to say "no"?

Bdog, exactly what are you trying to say? :D
FYI, if you're going for a longer ride, or riding often, you can also rub baby rash cream (Bepanthan) into the padding which will further reduce chafing.
I never wear underwear, anywhere.

Just doing my job, Bdog. Thank you for helping to spread the word! You're a good solider.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was "appropriate". But, hey, if everyone else is doing it...
Ok so now that we have that established, what about triathlon? I have found that when I am running, the bike shorts (bibs) don't offer the same support as an extra layer. btw, when I am talking about underwear, I have used my backpacking shorts, very thin and polypro. They wick and do not bunch. Perhaps I need to switch to speedos... but then there is no padding.
Ya ya, there is a triathlon forum, wasn't really intending on going this far with the subject. ;)
G'day,
aaaahhhh, a triathlete........that explains things!.....no wonder you're confused....they wear their undies on their heads!,

Yeah I think U-nazi got the no underwaer with bike shorts bit into my head too....bad part is I don't wear bike shorts, so no undies with blue jeans is an experience I will refrain from for a bit....however loose fitting boxers and baggy jeans are a no-no...well unless you enjoy getting your little folks mutilated between your thigh and the saddle...then by all means go ahead...but if you actually do care about that kind of pain...then don't wear loose fitting boxers with baggy jeans. trust me on this.
One does not normally wear underware under bike shorts. Wearing underware just gives you more seams to rub against your skin and chaff and that is not a good thing especially on a long ride. However, on shorter rides, it probably does not matter. On the plus side for underware, it does keep the cycling shorts cleaner. So it depends on your situation, I guess. Afterall, who is going to know? Do want you want.
Underwear also defeats the purpose of the padding and chamois in bike shorts.
No underwear!

Not quite, underwear on the outside for them. ;-)

you know they make cycling underwear with a pad built in for ppl who ride their bike in street clothes or whatever. you could check out a pair of those for under your jeans.

I did not know that. I'll have to pester the local performance bike sometime this weekend then. Hopefully the stuff isn't too expensive.

Oh, we'll know, Pat. We'll know!
At the first hint of a panty line, the Underwear SS will pat you down. Do you want to risk the wrath of the Underwear SS?
I thought not!
Do want you want.
It's this kind of permissiveness that is the downfall of our society!
