I've just recently gotten back on by bike after far too long. The only time I really get to ride these days is early (~6am). I am not really an early morning person, but ya got to do what ya got to do. I know I need to eat, the only question is what? Small breakfast before the ride with small snacks on the ride? Go ahead and eat a real breakfast first? Any advice is appreciated!

I wake up for my weekday rides at 5am and I'm biking by 5:30. I'm not a morning person either and it's very difficult for me to be hungry enough to eat anything. So far I've tried toast, bananas, cereal with milk, dry cereal, oatmeal, and yogurt. The only successful breakfast has been the yogurt. It's got enough sugar to get me going yet is light enough to not give me stomach aches like everything else did, even bananas. I'll have a big glass of water or half Gatorade/half water to go along with the yogurt and I feel energized throughout my 21 mile ride.

The worst mistake I ever made was not eating one morning. I felt worthless and slow and my average speed proved it. I'll take a stomach ache over feeling that terrible again.

G'day,

i s'pose soem would refer to me as a 'hardcore' racer. In the lead up to some events I have to train 2 sessions a day. Having to also hold down a job, means that i have to train both before work & after. I'm usually on the bike, (or in the gym), at around 5 - 5.30am for approx 2 hrs. I find I HAVE to eat before going out, otherwise it is virtually impossible for me to complete my workout. I'm NOT a morning person, & am never hungry in the mornings, but I know that if I don't make myself eat breakfast, I might as well stay in bed for all the benefit I will get from training......ya gotta fuel up the machine!,

cheers,

Hitchy

I usually just have a big glass of gatorade, and I take another bottle with me on rides that I've frozen in the freezer for my halfway rest stop. If I'm really hungry, I eat a powerbar also. I usually try to keep my stomach from getting full- I eat breakfast after my ride.

I ride almost every morning (not Thur or Sun) about 23-25 miles, and we head out at around 5:45. All I ever have is a normal size glass of OJ, and water during the ride - I feel stronger on the last 5 miles than I do during the first 5 miles. Our rides last a bit over an hour, but the OJ seems sufficient. Afterwards I usually eat about 3 bowls of cereal (I love cereal, yum!). Sometimes I'm in an eggy mood, though :)

On some Saturdays I'll do a 50 mile ride, and for that I have the OJ and 1 chewy granola bar, and I bring 2 chewy granola bars with me and bring gatorade instead of water.

I do 1/2 cup of oatmeal in the nuker for 3mins. Then add a hard boiled egg per 10 miles. Wash it all down with about a quart of h2o and thats it. Sounds wacky I know, but it works for me. If you pre-cook the eggs you're done with brecky in a flash. I usually eat 1/2 hour before I shove off.

I ride about half my rides at 6:30 AM and sometimes a little earlier. I drink 8-12 ounces of Gatorade, and I have a Powerbar. My rides vary from 20-26 miles and don't take much longer than an hour or so to finish. After the ride I cook breakfast, usually a couple of eggs overeasy or in omlet form, a piece of toast with jelly on it, some hashbrowns, and a couple pieces of bacon or sausage. For those who had the vegetarian post earlier, I unfortunately don't share your sentiment for our fury little forest friends. I live in northern Wisconsin, we eat meat (lots of it) deal with it. I just don't want any backlash from saying I eat some pork product almost every morning.

I'm a big fan of a bowl of oatmeal with some sort of fruit and low-acidity orange juice then perhaps a powerbar during long rides.
The low-acidity O.J. is a nice little trick as it keeps your stomach from getting upset first thing in the a.m. All sorts of jucies (and milk) can sometimes have a way of doing that.

On weekends when I will ride considerably longer I eat a lite breakfast about 1 hour before I ride, and eat a little on the ride.
