Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Velocity Deep V Front vs. Back

hey i'm planning on getting a dawes sst from bikes direct, but when i get it, i also want to get a deep v rim. im new to fixie community i guess you could say. 2 questions

whats more practical/better looking deep v in front or deep v in back

and would the stock spokes/hub from the dawes work or would I have to buy completly new stuff

The rim is deeper, so you will need new spokes. Why not just get a pair of new wheels prelaced and sell your old wheels? Deep V's are not very practical though. They are heavy. So buy them thinking only of style, not performance.

The front is a more practical. A lighter rear rim will make accelerating and slowing/skidding easier, and there will be more of an aerodynamic benefit if a deep rim it is in the front.

I have a similar looking rim that I laced, to learn how, and it looks great. It's my front wheel and it looks better than the Deep V I have in the rear.

I was under the understanding that Deep V's were practical in a sense that they are bombproof. In which case, I would personally get a rear over a front, as most of your weight is on the rear already, and wheelies are easier than stoppies.

Serious answer: it won't make any difference to you at all whether you have a Deep V in front or in back. If you really want one, just put it where you think it looks best.

so it seems this wheel gives you no performance advantage. are there any reasonably priced wheels that do?

if you put your wheels through some abuse and live in a relatively flat area, deep v rims are good rims to use. If you ride through rough conditions, go off curbs a lot, plan on tricking, etc., a properly built up deep v will be good for the abuse it can take. But if this is just for the sake of riding performance, there are better.

It depends on what you want your rims to do. Asking for a rim that will 'perform better' is meaningless without context. There's not some 'performance hierarchy' where you can rank every rim.

What is wrong with the rims you are getting? If you can't say, there's little to be gained by buying new ones.

Alex rims are going to work fine for the type of riding you'll be doing. Scruggle put it very well... if you don't really know what you're looking for in a wheel, then the differences between wheels (especially cheaper ones) will be unnoticeable.

The time you spend disassembling your alex rim "sub" (the bikesdirect bikes are so common that you just know what **** it comes with from the back of your head) and then reassembling with a deep v and then truing correctly is totally unworth it when you consider you most likely F up...... when you can just buy a cheaper velocity deep v wheelset from ebay....

if you do not care at all about how your bike performs but want it to look really cool, this is the way to go.

one of the coolest looking tarck bikes ever. however, he gave up a ton of functionality for it. but it's his bike and he's a good rider from what i saw of mash sf. it works for him.

what are you doing with your bike? maybe if you only abuse your back wheel and ride >30mph all the time a deep v + hed3 would be good for you. otherwise, just ride your bike until you know what you want/need.

also people on this forum will look down on you for taking looks over functionality btw. the deep v is not very good as a rim goes. it's heavy and the deep v-section does nothing. but, it's somewhat cool looking and it comes in many rimways, nippleways, and spokeways. there are much better rims out there - but you don't need to change anything if you don't ride enough to need it, or if you don't know what you want.

how much money do you have? how fast do you normally ride? how worried are you about the looks of your bike? how worried are you about performance?

if you don't keep up an average tempo of about 25-30 mph (which is a FAST tempo to keep up all day biking around) then an aero wheel is looks only and will actually decrease your performance. you will get blown around in a slight crosswind. it'll suck. you won't like it. unless of course you're a fast m otherfu cker and you cruise around your city at a fast pace all the time. then, it'll make you faster. ok. i will make this easy. don't get an aero wheel, it was a joke in the first place.

deep v's are heavier than other rims. they are also stronger. if you are one of those trick track people, i would tell you to get a bmx bike get deep v's. deep vs are fine but not worth switching out your current rims for basically. if you want, buy a lighter rim and rebuild your wheel. you'll learn a lot and have a different rim on your wheel. but the deep v is useless.

ok im just rambling. basically dont get the deep v get lighter stuff as it will make you feel faster.

I'm having difficulty quantifying how many ways this thread makes me sad.

i think its kind of pointless to ask about upgrades when you dont even have your bike yet! worry about upgrades later. esp your wheels. think about better pedals/clips/straps first.

i'm rocking this setup. i have formula hubs on my deep v, though. will it be a noticeably faster wheel if i get a better hub? the bike feels way faster than with 2 deep v's...
