Tandem Cycling - Early Burley (?) Samba - info appreciated

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I purchased this Burley Samba tandem earlier this summer in order to do longer family rides with our 7 year old. I am guessing that this is a very early Burley production year? Early 80's? It has all Suntour equipment including nice labeled "barcons". 6 speed in back, 3 rings up front. 26" wheels. Shifting is very exact. I am not sure if someone updated it to have road drops. I paid $425 for it. (I sold an old Schwinn Twinn for $350 so it was really only $75 out of pocket)

My son absolutely loves riding it. And I actually feel like I can zip along on this thing even when he's is not peddling. Nice having the 26" wheels so I can carry spares for the whole family that are all using the same wheel size.

I even managed to get my wife on this thing too!

It has been a good introduction to the world of tandem cycling. I am sure it will not be out last tandem. Any info would be appreciated.

thanks,
chris

That is one of the very early Sambas as in later years they added an internal lateral tube.
For a slight upcharge, this bike was available (new) with drop bars and appropriate shifters.
Those Suntour barcon shifters are trouble-free and accurate.
That looks like a Brooks saddle for the pilot; sold a used one recently for $85.
You got that bike at a bargain price and a definite step up from the Twinn!
Enjoy the ride TWOgether!
