I'm looking to upgrade my triple crankset but have an 8sp rear cassette setup. Most every crankset I've seen lists 10 sp or 9 sp. Do any of the current shimano cranksets work with an 8sp cassette? Any insight would be appreciated....

Most any crank would.

That's useful information. I wonder if I go with a 10 sp triple and a 10 sp chain if that would eliminate any issues. Maybe there is hope :-)

I am running a 10 spd triple with a 7 speed freewheel using an 8 speed chain. The clearances just are not that big of a deal until you get to 11 speed and even then I bet you could run a 9 speed chain and be just fine.

I am running a 10 speed triple chainset with an 8 speed cassette and chain for about 5 years without any problem. No need to get an 9 or 10 speed chain.

Thanks for the help, looks like I'll be picking up a new crank :)

DO NOT DO THIS. A 10 speed chain will be too narrow for an 8s cassette. Just use a standard 8s chain with a 10s crank, it'll work fine.

After doing a lot of digging, I just decided upgraded everything to 9 speed groupset. It shaved nearly 3 lbs off with 1.2 lbs coming from the crank alone (FSA RPM triple to DA 7703 triple). I was amazed how heavy that 8 speed stuff was. Now got to get my bodyweight down to 175. Can't wait till the rest of the parts come it to assemble it all :-)

I have a DA 7703 triple crankset (172.5) for sale, if you're interested.
