Introductions - Welcome, me!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey everyone,
My name is Jon-Kyle Mohr. I am currently the ripe age of 13 and reside in the (beautiful?) town of Smyrna, TN, about 10 miles south of Nashvegas.

Some of my hobbies apart from biking are astronomy, web development, drumming (since the age of two), golfing and aviation. I fly Cessna 172s with the Civil Air Patrol out of Smyrna Airport (KMQY).

I'm rather new at the whole biking scene. I learned at the age of 6 or so, kinda late! I recently purchased a "Rhino" bike from a local bike store. About three months after that I went on a trip up to PA. We visited a friend for a couple days. While there we went mountain biking. I don't mean those 5 lane wide rock trails. I'm talking about the 1 lane trails lined with trees, jumps, etc. I did rather well. I did a 1 and a half foot drop off :P.

I tried his Dad's bike, which was roughly a $1,500 investment that he got for free from his brother. It was an all carbon fiber frame with disc brakes. I could pick it up with my pinky finger, it was incredibly light!

I got back to our house and went hunting for some trails. I actually found two trails less then a mile away from my house today! Its great, I can't wait to go back again.

I purchased this multi-task Bell speedometer from Walmart today. For some reason it does not function right, but I'd like to return it and get another.

Any who, looks like an active community you have here, can't wait to get involved :)

Welcome to the forums! The important thing when installing a speedo on your bike is to CAREFULLY follow the directions. It has to be calibrated for you particular wheel size if it is going to work accurately. This is usually explained in the directions. Another problem that crops up with wireless computers is the distance between the transmitters down by the wheels and pedals, and the distance to the readout, or receiver. If the distance is too great the readings could be unstable or erratic. Since I ride a recumbent I use a wired computer. The distance from the wheels to the handlebar is to great for a wireless unit to work correctly. I use a Cateye Astrale 8.

How absolutely delightful to see an introductory post from a 13 year old who:

1. Can format his thoughts in a clear, concise, coherent and readable way.

2. Knows how to spell and can write complete sentences.

3. Is so involved in the world in many ways.

After reading some of the more recent posts, full of incorrect spellings, incomplete sentences and AOL'ese, reading this post is a real pleasure.

WELCOME! :) :) :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

djpeterb: Very cool! CAP meets in a smaller building next to the tower/hangers. We always stop by the base to hang out, grab a soda, etc.

bnet1: Thanks for the tip! I purchased a cheaper Bell computer, which is not wireless. I was somewhat confused with installing the magnet on a spoke, and where to put the detector on the fork.

In the diagram for installation it shows it around the center of the wheel. This does not seem right, as my bike would then be around 9 inches wide. Are you supposed to put it as far out on the spoke as possible?

I may just return this cheap one and pick up a nicer one.

DnvrFox: Why thank you! I see many of these "AOL'ese" posts around on different communities I participate in. It really starts to get old, I'd rather use my education for what it was meant for.
