FOLDING PEDAL falls off on ride. Common?
@@@
I was having such a nice ride out in Irvine, CA.
Just about up to the entrance to the Hicks Canyon Trail at Portola Parkway and pedaling away when the left pedal fell off and skittered down the walk. I watched it bounce along and thought: This is not good. 13.62 miles out. Long walk. Short ride.
The shaft had sheared off. Looks like metal fatigue. Not a very thick shaft. Suitable for small children, perhaps. Not a senior bear. The left one is the one that gets stood on in starting and stopping. I am not an UberClyde. More like ClydeLite - 240# of muscle and stored food reserves.
Learning to ride with one pedal was interesting. It can be done on the flat and downhill. Uphill, ya got issues. Happily, Hicks Canyon was downhill and I did 12+ knots to the bottom, mostly coasting. It's a very nice bike trail with center planter strip, horse trail opposite, benches, water, and trail lighting. Must be a nice walk or ride at night. Irvine does a good job on bike trails.
The DW was phoned, pressed into service as the sag wagon and recovered me from a local park. Sure glad I was not 15 miles up some canyon or out in the boonies as I was much of the summer. Not much car access out there.
GIVING DIS WHERE DIS IS DUE...
The bike is a Montague Swiss Bike LX, which came into service 6 months ago and has been riding urban pavement, bike trails and rail trails since then. Nothing exciting and no issues with the bike itself.
I am a Geezer and a Geezer's gotta know his limits. Seventeen was 50 years back. No hucking and such.
The pedal is the folding model sold by Montague for it's folding bike.
I was about to buy another pair for my new Specialized FSR XC, but there was a note about Montague not standing behind them. Whatever that meant? Perhaps I will find out.
CLYDE-RATED PLATFORM PEDALS???
We need to rate pedals like ladders. I don't buy anything less than a 300# rated ladder.
Do folding pedals tend to self-destruct in service? The folding feature helps me transport the bike in my van and on the boat, but I need bomb-proof pedals. Who wants to hoof umpteen miles back? I carry enough stuff on the bike. Do I need to carry spare pedals or just the left one?
Should I swap them for something serious in a platform pedal before outback rides?
