Hello all. I've been riding my daughter's K-mart-special "mountain
bike" around the neighborhood for the past few years, been wanting
to get my own bike for awhile now. Finally freed up some funds.
What bike to buy? I did a bit of research and decided I wanted to go
for a hybrid. For the most part I'll be tooling around the neighborhood,
but also wanted a bike I could take for a longer ride (20 mile tour),
occasional commute or charity ride, and be able to take on rail trails.
Also, wanted a more or less upright position due to some back issues.
Last week I bought it, my first new bike since 8 years old (*very*
long time ago). It's a 2002 Specialized Sirrus Pro A1.
Local bike shop still had a new one they hadn't yet sold. It was
a pretty good deal, almost 50% off list price. I had them put on 28c
tires and model-2004 grips and saddle.
Took it out over the weekend - it's very light and quite fast.
A bit harsher ride than a mountain bike, for sure. Though I never knew bikes
could go so fast. Of course, right away I want to go even faster. :)
I found myself wanting to "drop down" for more aero position, perhaps
there is a road bike in my near future. :) But I'm happy my purchase.
Took it back to the bike shop today and had them add bar ends to give
a second hand position as well as better grip for going up the hills standing up.
That makes a big difference. It looks cool, too. (Another thing, I can actually
go up a hill now without having to get off and walk the bike up the hill!)
It's fun and great exercise. I signed up for a 100 mile charity ride
in September so better start getting into shape!
Next I'll be looking to get: Bike helmet, immediately.
Then: Shoes/clipless pedals, perhaps a proper bike shorts/undershort/jersey,
pump, flat repair kit, lock, ...
