I bent my rear wheel this weekend pretty bad on a local trail. I doubt the LBS will be able to fix it so I will most likely need to buy a new one. I would like to eventually upgrade my bike to disc brakes, and was wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a wheel that has a v-brake rim and hub that is disc compatible? I guess my underlying question would be, is the only drawback of that type of wheel its weight, or are their other reasons not to buy this type of wheel?

Assuming that your frame has rear disc tabs, or you plan to use an adapter, I see nothing wrong with your plan.
