I want to get a casual watch to wear everyday. I normally keep my watch on 24/7. This includes showering, sleeping, etc. The only time I take off my watch is at airports.
I already have a "professional" watch with a metal band. This time around, I want something casual & sporty....but can pass for professional if need be.
If you won a raffle and had to choose between these two, which would you choose?

Both look tuff and zombie proof but I like the first one. I always like numbers on my watch faces and all 12 of them too.
Ernest
I too like numbers on the face, but only if they look good. But in this case, I'd go with #2, because the numbers facing in different directions on a clock face is a pet peeve of mine.
Then again, the second lacking numbers on the face, then having giant second markers on the "bezel" is kind of annoying too.
This is why it took me something like a month to find a watch I liked.

#1 looks a bit more professional. #2 looks a little like a diver's watch.

neither. I'm a huge fan of Nixon (I've had one for about six years now, have only had to replace the battery):

I can't see the second one.
I'm with c0urt, I get rashes from rubber straps if I don't take them off after a few hours. Also, the heat from showers isn't great for a watch, from what I've read.

I like the numbers on number 1.
Personally I look for titanium watches - so much lighter than the steel ones. Seiko had one design that was offered in steel and ti so I was easily able to compare. Wow, the steel was like wearing an anchor.

if you want a beater that can take abuse, these may be worth looking into.

I didn't see the second one, but, I would go with the first one because it is a Casio. Their stuff has always held up well for me. Things happen to me that don't even think of happening to other people.
My work place has a jewelry policy, so I carry a Colibri skeleton pocket watch. It's mechanical,
loses a couple of minutes a day, but, I like it.

Not to hijack the thread but admit it, how many of you have forgotten your watch and asked someone what time it was while you had the cell phone in the pocket? :o Maybe a sign that you're old?

No, what makes me feel old is the aching joints, slowing metabolism, sagging skin and going outside in my pajamas to tell kids to get the **** off my lawn.

sounds like you're doing it right.
I go for anything Casio G-Shock. My main watch I wear when riding is the Casio 5600E G-Shock. It's not analog but it's only $36 on Amazon, water resistant to 200M, tough as nails and it's not a big deal if something happens to it (it would take something fairly traumatic to break it).
I have dressier watches for other things but my everyday watches are beaters.

no watch....just carry cell phone in pocket.Ick. I got a watch to avoid being That Guy. Plus, watches are so much more convenient and attractive.
Seiko watches are awesome bang/buck. And they still make nice mechanical watches, for those who appreciate such things and don't want to spend four figures.
oh, and I can see both now; they look pretty similar, but if I had to pick one, I chose the first.

Being involved in lab work, I quit wearing any jewelry. No rings, no watch. I can't see a watch through a lab coat and a tyvek splash sleeve, so what's the point?
After a few years of not wearing a watch, having one on feels odd and uncomfortable. I wish I could get used to wearing one again, because there are so many cool looking watches out there.

not a fan of ti watches. scratch too easily.
Seiko watches are awesome bang/buck.Yeah, I got to looking at Seikos based on posts here, and was really surprised how much watch I could get for what I was looking to pay.
Citizen seemed to have a pretty good selection, as well.
not a fan of ti watches. scratch too easily. It has gotten fairly stratched up in the year I've had it, especially the clasp. It seemed like most of the non-ti watches in my price range were shinier than I was looking for, though.
get an ink eraser. that will help 'polish' the ti.

This watch is meant to be an everyday watch. I needed something with a stop watch and an alarm. It's almost like a beater. They're not too expensive. They're around $65 - $75. But not exactly "beater" price either. I think it's because of the cool gadgets they have. Both these watches sync up with atomic time on a daily basis. They will be off about 1 second every 1.4 million years (or something like that). They're both also solar powered. No need for batteries. On a full charge, they can run up to 6 months without having to recharge again. Just cool (useless) gadgets I guess.
However, in my defense, I'm a swimmer (or trying to be one). I'm in the pool 2 - 3x a week. I have my watch in the pool. So here's how my twisted logic works: Any watch that doesn't require battery changes (i.e. kinetic or solar powered) will be better sealed (from the factory) than ones that require you to open, change the battery and re-seal again. I know....twisted logic.
Although I can appreciate expensive watches like TAG, Rolex, Omega, etc., I'm just way too rough on my watches to wear a really expensive one. If I ever decide to own an expensive watch, I know I'll end up only wearing it a few times a year on special occasions, in fear of scratching it. It would truly be a shame to have such a nice watch sitting at home 95% of the time. Almost the same as having a $3,500 road bike and afraid of dirtying the chain & rear cassette.
My philosophy in life: If I can't afford (willing) to use something on a daily basis and beat on it, I'll buying something less expensive that I'm willing to beat on.

My other (and only) watch is very similar. Titanium band & bezel along with using kinetic energy. It was my first (and only) "nice" watch.
I wore it 24/7. When I first brought it, maybe because I had the mental thought of "if I don't have it on, it's going to run out of battery and stop running". So, I had it on 24/7 and it became a habit.
Seriously, it was with me while showering, sleeping, swimming, riding, snorkeling, softball, snowboarding, etc.
It is completely scratched up. Wore it for 5+ years without really taking it off. The only reason I want a plastic band for a 2nd watch is because of weight & comfort.
Here are some pictures of my well worn & well used Seiko. I got my money's worth from this one. From the way it has held up, I have a feeling it'll last me another 50 years. I really like this watch a lot. Like x136 said....VERY light. Zero maintenance. Never need batteries, and works well in 10ft deep water. I swim 3x a week and it holds up fine in chlorine water.

Never had that problem. I took off my Seiko for a year because I was backpacking across Australia & SE Asia for a year. I brought a cheap $15 Casio for the trip. I went to Australia in January when it was 95 degrees there. I was in Singapore & Malaysia during June when it was over 100 degrees with a crap load of humidity. The plastic/rubber band did accumulate more moisture than a metal band would, but with daily showers (or 3), it never bothered me. I also wear my watches on the loose side as well. If I have it super tight, my skin does get irritated.

I'd get the second -- lines are better than numbers
I have an old Wave Ceptor that I'd love to replace, but can't because I like it much better than the current models. Among other things, it came with a stainless steel band and two line LCD display so I can have more info up.
I'm wondering if they ever have trouble getting the second hand out of sync with the atomic clock? Mine has no second hand, but once the watch malfunctioned and the minute hand was 20 seconds out of sync with atomic time. Fortunately, there is a procedure to remedy that.

Okay, now I see the second one, boy, my previous post in this thread must have made me look like a moron. Oh well, nothing new, life goes on.
I work at a facility that manufactures plastic cutlery, apparently someone, somewhere, is concerned about jewelry getting packed into the product.
As a result, the PTB instituted a jewelry policy that allows 1 non stone wedding band, anything else including piercings must be removed or covered.

As a matter of fact, I have the first one on my wrist right now. As my eyes (and the rest of me) rapidly approach the half-century mark, I have come to have a new appreciation for analog watches with numbers. I have a yen for the Casio atomic solar watches, and own about five of them. Excellent and durable watches.
This is a Victorinox Swiss Army Officer's watch. It's an automatic, which means it's a real mechanical movement - no battery - the movement of your wrist keeps it wound. Sapphire crystal (more scratch resistant than glass). At the very bottom of the face picture you can see where it says Swiss Made. One cool feature is the "skeleton back" where you can see the movement. The watch gets wound by that rotor spinning around as your arm moves.
White collar environment. Office environment.
unless you're working in a NYC law firm, a NYC financial guy, or a high end salesman of some sort, i wouldn't sweat the "but can pass for professional if need be."
i've seen plenty of successful professionals with hilariously cheap and/or tacky watches.
BTW, for all you guys scratching your watches, just use Brasso. It helps a lot, and you can use it on the crystal.
when it comes to watches, brasso should only be used on acrylic crystals.
that's it.

"Neither"
I'd vote cat 3 mostly because I don't like the looks of either of the 2 you posted. For my money, a "low level" Rolex is a better investment for a watch than anything on the market. I wear my Rolex Date every day and don't take it off even when working with a hammer or shovel.
Self winding is MUCH better than anything with a battery.
Choosing quality shows others that you really care about your stuff and likely will care about theirs too.

not really; I prefer mechanicals myself but quartz watches in general are considered more accurate than mechanicals, regardless of price. Not that the +/- few seconds will really matter for most of us, but quartz is more than adequate for daily wear.
I do agree a nice mechanical watch sends a nicer image than a quartz anything...for a man, it's arguable that a nice watch and good quality shoes go a long way.
