Can't say without seeing the condition of the bike, but I think you paid too much.
Kinda late now.
Do you have a digital camera? Take a picture and post it.

my advise for the future is, first off, dont buy things on a spur of the moment...ever. second, always research before you buy, ask around, go to review sites, always try to get the best deal you can before you buy anything. and one last thing, remember you don't always have to buy new, somtimes used is just as good and it's cheaper.

If it's in good running condition, it's WAY better than a dept store bike. You may need to upgrade brakes and replace worn bits.
Check the frame for cracks, it's older Alu which is prone to fatigue. If it's not been run much in it's life, probably fine. if lots of component wear, scratches, dings, it may have passed it's prime.
Older Chromo frames are fine to have been ridden lots, they'll get softer, but rarely suffer breaks.
For $179 you can't get much in the way of a new bike, I'd pay that much for a good used Chromo mtb frame.

It's probably nicer than my 1st mtn. bike, although mine was back in '93. I still have mine. It's a DiamondBack Accent EX. It got me hook on the sport, so it couldn't be too bad, huh?
