Dyed in the wool road biker here but I took my wifes Specialized Hard Rock out the other night to adjust the shifters and found that I had ridden furthur with more enjoyment and less pain than I do on my Paramount...what does this mean??

Then, to put a nail in this particular coffin..I live in St Augustine Fl which is the terminus of the southern tier cross the USA route and a guy was in the local Irish bar last night that had just completed the San Diego to Florida ride in 45 days on a Hybrid towing a small trailer. I spent an hour and some beer money debriefing him and looking over the bike..I think I may be in for a change soon.

Stop thinking, start thinking "flat bar road bike", doesn't that feel better?

I hate to break it to you though... a HardRock is a Mountain bike not a Hybrid :P

my favorite bike is a hybrid that I converted for the road with drops and tires. it is also quite fast and I love the triple crank

That is cool..I was looking at going the other way. I was going to put flat bars on my road bike but I have been looking at the new Treks and the Cannondale Bad Boy's and I am getting the idea I might like disc brakes and a lefty fork

specialized sirrus. $500.
flat bar road bike in the flesh.
skinnier tires, and you will be right at home.

I have checked out the Sirrus, in fact I am going to ride one this weekend. It looks like it could be a contender and thanks for the input.
In the meantime I found a mountain bike that seems to have street overtones. It is a Giant Rincon, 2003. A second hand store score ($25) and it is clean and rides great I'm just not used to a bike with front suspension..it felt like I was getting a flat for the first few miles. I think that one is a flipper bike after a few weeks of playing with it..it would cost too much to street tire it.

I would suggest you skip it or you might wind uo with more bikes and maintenance that you need. keep looking for the right bike. a lot of people like flat bar bar road bikes. I like drops and jusy always raise them with new stems, but that's me.

I have a hybrid, a very nice vintage racing bike, and a restored 3-speed. These 3 bikes cover all the types of riding I do.
