Thinking of doing some roadie climbing/ century events on a 29'er. How do you XC guys train? Cross over to road events (particularly climbing events) on the 29'er make sense?

I'm thinking of doing one in December just to get the feel for a long ride on a 29'er.

Right now training is 70% road bike, the rest on MTB (mostly long climbs).

Any books like Friel's 'Training Bible' for XC MTB?

Is there a website for XC racing in SoCal?

Thanks.

Obie, have you seen socalcycling.com I believe it is. They cover most all competitive cycling events.

Couldn't get registered on Socalbike forums. I'll figure it out. I wanted to post on the OC climbing thread.

You've got me thinking about the MTB, cross, road combo riding and trying to figure out the best all-round bike for it. 29er, cross, or MTB. Do you have a 29er?

I think I'm not yet ready for the bagging of Baldy with you this Sunday yet so I was thinking I would take the new Hybrid up Silverado, Maple Springs to Saddleback as far as feels comfortable.

You should double post this on the Southern Cal regional forum.

Also start one about the Tour de Francis. Want to hang out and get to know those guys in Adobo Velo. They are cool!

Yea, I ck. SoCalCycling for news. The guys at Surf City run some local stuff out in Irvine. They're opening a new store right down the street from my house next month, so I'll probably get up to speed once I pop for a 29'er from them. US Cycling for event news too.

Baldy weather window is closing I think. The weather radar showing snow in places on Big Bear this a.m.
Sunday weather looks a bit cool early and then mid 70's.

Tour de Francis is a good ride. VB and his buddies like this one.

Welcome to the world of MTBing. I think we have the better race locations and better vacation rides. I prefer the trail less traveled.

So Obie,

Rigid, hardtail, or full suspended 29er? Any modifications besides tires to make it road-worthy? Bars? Gearing?

Good luck tomorrow!

I'm looking at the Specialized 'Rockhopper' 29'er. Hardtail w. disc b's. Want to try some XC events next year and, people say pop for FS, flat bar and such for XC...but, I've got a short budget for now. The M4 frame on the Rockhopper should get me going. I like the triple for now...1x9, SS? Maybe. David W. says his SS MTB is really cool. Choices, choices.

Tomm. should be fun...again. Can't miss up there for a good time.
