Foo - Astronomy

Many of you may not know this but I'm an Astronomy nut. I have three telescopes and often spent my time outside at night looking into the dark skies in wonder. Anyway, I have a very important question for you good people. What is your favorite planet? Mine happens to be Uranus.

I have a ten inch Celestron Newt with a flakey controller gathering dust.
Meh eyepieces, but the mirror is really nice and the tube is flocked.

I need to do something with it.

My first telescope was an Astroscan. I took it to college and you can just imagine what my roomate wanted to use it for. I still have it btw.

Saturn is my second favourite planet.

My first is a really oddball one covered mostly in water and appearing blue from outer space.;)

Whats the name of the one that has a horizontal (to the ecliptic) axis? Big brown marble that rolls its way around the sun.

A couple of months ago, I found a $15 Newtonian reflector at a yard sale and bought it. I immediately purchased a decent eyepiece and a barlow lens, and I've really enjoyed it. It's only 500mm with a 4.5 inch (I think) mirror, but it's enough to see Jupiter and 4 of its moons, and Saturday night I saw the Orion Nebula from my light-polluted back yard. Now I'm wanting something a bit more capable, but I'll have to just keep my eyes peeled on Craigslist. Can't really justify a new scope right now (plus I also want a microscope).

Oh, and besides Earth, I guess my favorite planet is Jupiter. That's the only one I've been able to see so far.

Just so you know, Telescopes and Astronomy can be highly addictive...just like bikes. With that said, if you are interested in Astronomy I suggest you find a local community group before you buy another scope. You will also learn more about Astronomy as well.

If you don't have a local group I highly suggest you pick up 'Turn Left At Orion'. It's an awesome book and I use it everytime I look up at the stars.

That was a little too intense for me. The horror of preparing the tube, the intense action of making the spider, the emotion of calculating the effective focal length...I just couldn't handle it.

Not to mention, it looked like he was using a screwdriver as a chisel for mortising his secondary mirror mount.

Gliese 581c is pretty cool, but my favorite planet is Saturn.

I had A Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, a decent set of binoculars, and no light pollution whatsoever growing up (farm). One year I received a crappy Sears telescope from Santa, but that's as far as I got into it. The observatory on campus here is open to the public on Saturday nights; it's pretty cool. I do like being able to identify most major constellations and planets.

I'm more interested in cosmology. Thinking in such small terms as to only be concerned about our own solar system kind of bores me.

I used to be a pretty heavy astronomy nut when I was younger (teenage years). I had my own telescope and everything. I couldn't really use it where I lived because I lived across the street from a school that had bright lights on through out the night. :(
