Hi all,

Let me first start out with a bit of a back story, if you will. This season my primary goal was nationals coming up in a week or two in Utah. However, I've been overtrained and falling in and out of sickness since June, so this goal has faded and I've just been maintaining fitness with the plan of doing well next season. I have never smoked weed or anything for that matter, although it has been something I've been contemplating trying for a long time now.

With no goals in the near future cycling wise, I began thinking that if I am ever going to try, now would be the time. I am curious to know what kind of effects smoking one time would have in the short term (days to weeks) and in the long terms (the coming months and the next season). I have debated the idea a lot with myself, and I decided that I need some other opinions and maybe some stories of past experiences to make the decision.

Mind you, I know that there will be a price to pay, even for a single try, and this is what I need to guage. Also, please don't turn this into a pro or anti drug discussion, I am well aware that many, if not all, of you have strong opinions on this matter, and I respect that, but I am just here to find some facts. Thanks in advance.

it's common knowledge that weed is a gateway drug that leads to stronger things. Like ice cream, or excessive amounts of Comedy Central.
Might even lead to voting for the Democratic ticket.

Obviously, I'm pulling your leg.
Road racers are pretty intense people, so it might be good for some relaxation.

Best,

Hi,
the second smartest thing I ever did was quit smoking.
Please don't start. It will likely become a habit, and then slowly
diminish the aerobic capacity you need to race. To live. If you absolutely have to try the stuff, make some hash brownies, or find someone who knows how to make pot cookies.

I haven't smoked anything in a quarter of century. Not long after I stopped the country went totally crazy. The drug penalties for pot make no sense. The risk of going to jail is just not worth it. If you have to, save up, go to Amerstadam and buy some hash legally. And then make some hash brownies.

One time won't hurt you unless you like it! It can be very habit forming. Usually you don't get stoned the 1st time or that's what they told us 30 years ago, maybe today's potent weed will wack you out before you know it. Make sure you're at least 13 miles off-shore (international waters) so you don't break any laws!

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it. Definately take not that this would be a one time deal, no questions asked. That said, I think that it might be likely to have less effect going into the next season. As to the law side, I'll be out in the middle of the pacific if / when it goes down. ;)

g'day,

you're obviously not serious about your cycling, if you are considering doing this. Why would you want to do something like that to your body & give your opponents even the slightest advantage?.....some people don't deserve good health! bet there are a million people out there who would kill to have your health...& you wanna risk it?...no matter how small the risk?...geez,

cheers,

Hitchy

Your an adult. If you want to try it, go right ahead. You won't get hooked on one joint, and it won't destroy your life. Some of the fastest & most skillful mountain bikers that I know toke up from time to time. You'd have to start smoking pretty seriously for it to diminish your long term aerobic capacity. You'd also have to smoke out often for it to negatively effect your skill/coordination level. What would most likely happen (in this instance) is you would smoke alot (once to several times each day for a month or more) and you would get lazy. This would cause more harm than anything. This being said, I quit smoking the green about six years ago, and cigarrettes almost a year ago and can tell no side effects. HTH.

You simply don't need it. Some people are more prone to habits than others.

It's not about the weed, my friend. Your long term aerobic capacity will diminish on it's own. Todays weed is tommorrows wheeze.

Suppose you love it ?

Why tempt the fates ?

I toke from time to time. However, do not toke and then go ride. I'm serious.

OTOH, I realized that it's not that great or really that fun. I usually only smoked about once every few months, but gave it up in hopes of becoming a firefighter. It won't cause any harm, other than weight gain from munchies.

I used to smoke it occasionally. The only habit it forms is really a social one.

I have sensitive lungs, so I don't smoke it anymore, and haven't in about 10 years. But from time to time I have some in brownies.

If you do this latter, which I would recommend over smoking, do it very carefully and in very small quantities. THC can be hallucinogenic in large doses, and uncontrollable laughing is not as funny as it sounds! At least when it's you doing the laughing, ...

it's on par with drinking. there are many things out there that are worse, you just have to keep things in moderation. as you know, there are laws against it (even though it's a naturally occuring plant...but that's a discussion for another time) so don't do anything stupid, like buy it from an undercover cop or put yourself at risk legally. the "harmful" effects are so minimal for the amount that you're considering, i would be very surprised to learn that it would affect your performance in any way.

Don't smoke it! It does far more damage to your lungs than cigarettes!

Granted, I have smoked it in the past, but I would never smoke again, because of that reason and plus, what if you get a job offer and you just smoked?

I think there is very little risk for your health as long as you don't start regularly smoking. Try it a couple of times if you want, but just be conscious that if you start smoking excessively, your lung will burn badly when you ride and you probably will be content with lazing around instead of doing more constructive things.

I use marijuana regularly, though I probably "smoke" it less than half the time. I bought myself an electric vaporizer years ago that lets you inhale the THC without all the tar and carcinogens. I use that while I'm indoors, though I do use a pipe to smoke it when I'm out (often while out for long rides on my bike). I don't find it's affected my stamina or respiratory system in any noticeable way, but I'm just a casual rider, I've never timed myself going anywhere or participated in any races. If anything, while out riding, I find it takes my mind off any pain or tiredness and helps me go longer distances.

I wouldn't specifically recommend it, it's not something you need to try, or do in life, but if you want to try it once it's not going to kill you.

I do believe at least the way I do it with my vaporizer is less unhealthy than drinking alcohol, and I prefer the effect of weed.

To some extent, of course, we all want to take good care of our bodies, but remember, no matter what you do, your body isn't going to last forever. Don't let worrying about living an extremely long life prevent you from enjoying what you can of your life.

It's not the pot or the booze that is the problem it's the abuse of it.

Novice users often don't experience any kind of high the first few times they smoke. Some people do get high right away, some don't. Just something to think about.
If you do decide to do it, organize your setting. Nice food, a sunset, good company, a favourite album or movie... something like that :)

That's what happened to me the first time I smoked.

I'm usually all for new experiences. For instance, if someone invites me to lunch I'll take them up on it even if I don't know them well. However, with pot I'd advise against experimentation.

If you choose to try it decide firmly whether this will be the only time you try it and stick to your conviction regardless of how you like the experience. Don't leave an open door for a new bad habit to come in.

jbaskin,

Don't do it.

I have done more then my share of that crap in my life. I decided to stop 4 years ago and my life is much better now. It is the little things, like motivation, that you don't notice are slipping but soon enough they are gone.

I understand the excitement that is involved in smoking for the first time. Resist it.

I am guessing you are between the age of 14 and 17 and maybe not exactly sure what you want out of life. You may not think about it right now, but you most likely have every door in the entire world open to you at this moment. In just a few short years many of those doors will be closed. You are not just a kid waiting to turn into an adult, you are shapping your life right now. I know it sounds cheezy but YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH YOUR LIFE. So don't go around trying to be a 28 year old who performs a menial job all day (that anyone can do) just so they can come home and drink a few beers or smoke a j on their couch.

How about this... you can be a 28 year old performing heart surgery on a child, or a fighter pilot flying jets off an aircraft carrier, or an astronaut, businessman, airline pilot, navy seal, working for the FBI, CIA, living abroad working as a translator, riding your bike as a pro in europe (but I would have a backup plan for this one) or whatever... anything you want... pick it. I can tell you though, getting high now is only going to make it harder to get what you want in the long run.

Plan for the long term. Do not live for the moment. Your life will be harder right now, but all the really good stuff in life is accumulated in the long run.

I am up in Utah till at least the end of summer. Shoot me a message if you are interested in going for a ride sometime.

I used to smoke pot a long time ago...and I used to smoke a lot of it. Yeah, yeah...you shouldn't use drugs, but I can't really see the harm in trying this one. If it weren't for the damaged brain cells, man-boobs (so i hear), and the munchies, I'd probably get high every now and then now. Frankly, you'll find it pretty darn relaxing. I'd always get giggly, but I was pretty relaxed and nothing else seemed to matter at that moment.

If you're gonna try it...do it at home or at a friend's house. don't go anywhere once your lit, as you don't want to risk getting into trouble. drink lots of water and try not to eat a whole pizza by yourself. I recommend putting in a funny movie, too...you'd be surprised how funny things are :-)

If you're really down to get "crazy"...have one of your sober buddies drive you to a drive-thru and try to order something...good luck with that one...those voices coming out of the little speaker are something else.
