According to this list, the top 10 are all 30% or steeper. To be honest, I have not ever heard of any of the top 4 before. Number one is reportedly just as steep as Canton Ave. in Pittsburgh, the purported steepest urban street in the world.

New challenges for the likes of bostic, uspspro, beaker, and associates.

Look for the coming beaker's SF Death Ride.

I'd say that looks perfect for Captain Via Roble.

My steep street itch remains scratched at this time.

Very nice. #10 on the new and improved list: [25th above Grand View (30% grade)] was on a route up 25th, a few blocks from my abode, that I did somewhat irregularly for an early morning workout. I scanned my pic archives and managed to find one with the street sign and the 40+ lbs. Varsity that I pushed up the last section. You can only get an idea of the slope by noting the angle of the Lexus parked by the post.

johnny99 - good query.

Beaker - is that a gauntlet I see about to roll down the hill..?

edit: Beaker - ahh, you're too fast for me.. again.

Someone should measure Kearny between Broadway and Vallejo. There's a wall at the Vallejo end, so don't count on continuing, if you ride it-) There are steps along the east side, so you can walk up, and an alley to turn into - or turn out of, if you're into death defying downhill.

There are plenty of streets in SF that are quite steep, but are probably not graded.

Thought I'd resurrect this today since I finally took my garmin out to measure this street in my neighborhood (Potrero Hill). I've ridden it before but never with the garmin. This is heading up 22nd st from Kansas towards Carolina. I wanted to walk it today to try and get a decent measurement...looks like it's about 24-27% the whole way (it actually read 28-30% on the unit as I was walking the last climb). The peak is actually 27% as the 705 freaked out mid way (bug where it loses gradient for a sec). The downhills aren't true downhills as it's mainly climb, crest, flat, climb, crest, flat, summit. Here's the location in case anyone is curious or in the neighborhood...

This is my hood too, I've thought about trying to ride that block, but never been brave enough :D I may have to try it...

That final list in the OP looks pretty scary :twitchy:

Your Garmin isn't claiming that those are downhills - it's just that the gradient goes down from it's brief peak of 25% to a more manageable 10% for a brief period before climbing back to 20%. It's all still up!

Heh...good point...I'm so used to graphing elevation not grade!

The only saving grace for me is it's easy to abandon at a crest if need be. :)
