Cyclocross - I use my cyclocross bike for...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I do all of the options except multi-day rides. I always use 23c slicks when riding too.

Chose general getting around but it is most to do most the above. Haven't done a race maybe this year.

My one's set up as a winter commuter. I use it the least number of times possible.

racing is the intention, but the most use is mtb singletrack...

so, it seems the consensus is 'everything'

Yeah, interesting results - so flat across the top 5 results. Only serious mtb, and the two multi-day options are less popular. So far I'm the only multi-day off-road guy. :)

Longish (30-40 mile) mixed surface rides. Pavement, dirt roads and some singletrack.
So whats more fun, buzzing roadies or blowin' MTBers into the weeds?

Hmm. I've been dropped by mtb's on the road...fortunately have not yet been passed by a road bike on singletrack :)

I have actually done this...
To be fair I got dropped by several (most) other mountain bikers...
but still.

I did a full road season on my cross bike last year after my road bike had to be put out to pasture.
I don't commute but do all the other choices so I didn't vote.
ah crap... stupid multi choice polls.. :)

I checked everything except offroad touring and hardcore mountain biking. I pretty much use my Surly for everything except pulling a plow and running my cotton gin. My Model T still does that.

Yea Surly. My crosscheck started as a commuter but then got into century + road riding and now crossing the cyclo. I am finding however, that racing is a danger to my communting. Ive destroyed rims, bent up other stuff and feel the need for simplified drivetrain. Even with a second set of wheels for racing its not quite working. So. I am thinking of building a new crossbike but do I try to clone what I have or what? I wonder if an aluminum frame would be a good way to go (too cheap for carbon). The rest is just parts. Is nashbar really that bad? cheap!!

High-speed long-distance commute, fun and fitness rides on paved trails.

My view on aluminum is that for bikes that go with big tires or on dirt, it's fine. I've often been tempted by the Nashbar cross frame.

I built my bike with the Nashbar X frame and cf fork. I really like it. It's only my first and only bike build. The worst thing I say about it is the sizing decision. I have never been more baffled by frame specs. I finally just ordered the biggest one. I 'm 6'2", long legs and arms. It, in my own mind, fits. Fork and frame have held up well under some pretty tough tumbles and even a head on collision with another cyclist (crack **) but, that's a whole 'nother story and thread.

Hmm, my bike, which is a Surly Cross check, is my spare bike that I use when either my Road bike (Alex Moulton Double Pylon) or my cargo bike (Surley Big Dummy) is out of commission. With the nice rack Surly makes I can carry a lot of stuff so it is pretty good at grocery shopping but the Big Dummy can carry a lot more. The Cross Check does well as a commuter and if I lived where it snowed I'm sure it would be my winter commuter of choice but the Double Pylon is just way more comfortable and is also a bit faster. The cross check is however the only bike I own that is up to the Oahu perimeter ride (134 miles) which is mostly on paved roads but involves riding a really rough five mile stretch of unpaved road and carrying the bike while traversing a cliff face in order to get around Kaena point. A mountain bike would be way too much work on the road portion and a road bike, and particularly the Moulton, couldn't handle the rough road. So, if I could only own one bike the cross check wins hands down.

My CX is a Motobecane 2x9 from BD. Best 500.00 I've ever spent. The versatility of the cx bikes in general is pretty amazing.

OK i officially dont yet have a cross bike, it is on its way, but the plan is to race, commute, ride trails and roads. Since i plan to ride on the road this doesnt neccassarily mean im gotta sell my road bike, does it?
