Picked up a Trek Fuel 80 (2002) with a dented top tube, Deore 9sp.
(I paid $ for it so I'm a chump, must'v had a bad day)

Now that I have it I think the dent "looks bad" but for the XC riding this newbie will do I think it'll be fine.
Now that it's old, worn, dented and full of "character" I want to fix what's there and ride the heck out of it.
I can't afford fancy new stuff so I'll ride this into the ground for now.

I bought a rebuild kit for the rear Fox Float air sleeve, and will take the Manitou Black forks apart, clean and re-lube/oil everything. New chain and even a replacement Deore shifter/lever and Easton seatpost is on the way ($8 and $7, thanks Jenson).

At least I don't have to treat this bike nice!

Just thought I'd share. Pics to come.

Worth it to buy a new rear cassette to go with my new chain?
Will I really have much issue? The cogs don't look elongated or worn to nubs.

Any source for rebuild parts/tips on the Manitou fork?

Don't know how much it differs from an '02, but '04 Black service manual with service kit and part numbers here:

http://www.manitoumtb.com/index.php?page=support&c=service-guides

2002 Black owners manual here:

http://www.manitoumtb.com/index.php?page=support&c=product-manuals

If you get really stuck and need some "insider's tips" on rebuilding/tuning the Black, you might try e-mail James Huang (link to what's left of his Angry Asian web site: http://www.angryasian.com). He knew the Black inside and out and used to be a wealth of suspension tuning/rebuild information, Not sure why he took down his site.

That's not ugly at all! Just watch out for the dent.. aluminum is a little risky.

I agree. Good deal all told on what you got, but I'd be careful with that dent... and keep an eye open for an un-dented frame you can pick up for cheap and swap the parts over to...

Yeah, I'm surprised what the frames alone are going for so I guess I didn't do terribly since I can still ride this one and it gets me to Deore 9speed.

I rebuilt the airsleeve for $8 last night and I'll pick up some o-ring kit for the front shocks today.
