Here is a picture of my "new" Peugot. I'm curious about how much its worth and possibly the year. The S/N is 1764036. Thanks

1970 +/- UE8, cousin to the UO8. Low end Peogeot, value depends where you live and whether the bike is ready to ride. Looks pretty clean, around here, about $150.

Thanks. The bike rides nicely and fits me pretty good. Is it worth it to upgrade shifters etc (currently PLASTIC) or should I just keep the bike completely period? I'd like to put something together that will be a reliable bike to ride for long distances.

Welcome to the "wonderful world" of vintage french bikes. Peugeot used a somewhat unique attachment for those levers, read various UO8 threads on what others have done. I have had three UO8s. Just one guy's opinion on upgrades that make the most sense:

1. Replace plastic Simplex RD with something decent, like a Suntour product. Can find good Suntour RDs in the $10 to $15 range.

2. Upgrade wheels to alloy rims. Find a donor bike and it is really cheap, or buy new wheelset at Niagara or similar for around $75.

3. Upgrade to an alloy crankset. Difficult part is you first need to find a replacement square taper spindle, or spend $50 on a French threaded cartridge bb.

You can see how fast you can get up to spending a couple hundred on the bike.

The best "upgrade" is to just clean it up really good, replace cables and housings, and ride it. When you want to upgrade similar to the list above, just sell the bike, and pick up a bike that already has everything you want.

Peugeots have a nice reputation out there and a clean one like yours will bring more than similar equipped bikes (cottered crank, steel wheels, plastic Simplex derailleurs, etc).

For long distance rides, I would look for something else. If you are patient, you can find some pretty nice bikes out there. I replaced my 1975 UO8 with a 1983 Lotus that I picked up last year for $16. (OK, I had to do quite a bit of clean up and rehab on it).
