I am going to buy a new helmet in about 2 weeks. I have a Wall Mart Bell cheepo and I hate looking like the elephant man so I'm looking for a helmet thats small. I like Giro styles but only have about $100 (less if possible) :(

Any suggestions?

Shop around. You'll find something nice for under 75.00 and maybe even 50.00. Here's what I would suggest......go to the local bike shop and try on the model and price range you like. When you are settled on which one bid them good-bye and check out the internet prices of the model you just selected and fitted for. If the price is not substantially lower (dont forget the shipping and waiting) then go back and dicker with the local boys. They deserve some business now and then just for being there :)

My dad has a bell alchera and it's a nice helmet. His head still looks like a mushroom, but thats just from his huge skull and large layer of hair. Im sure if he shaved his head he couldve gotten a small size helmet.

Anyway, he got it at performance for $45 +tax and he really likes it.

I have a Trek Interval I got for $49.99 Since bike helmets in the US fall under a certain set of standards, anything over about $50-60 you're paying for style. You can get some Giro helmets for in the $50 range. You just have to look around a little. I know exactly what you're talking about with the Wally World special. Those things are massive.

The cheap, bulky Bell helmets probably provides more protection for your head than the slimmer, more stylish helmets. I use a $40 Bell helmet. About two weeks ago I tried several new helmets at my local LBS, mostly Specialized and Trek branded in the $40 - $100 range. None of them provided the same amount of head coverage that the Bell helmet does. They sure looked good though.

I'm still drooling over that Bell Metro helmet that somebody mentioned around here recently. I just haven't found a store that carries it yet.
