I hate it when cycling is put down as not being a sport. This, though is ridiculous.

Poker is a sport now? Far out.

I suggest we start a campaign to get Hungry Hungry Hippos admitted as an olympic sport. At least it requires some level of athleticism.

I noticed the thread title, and an article on the website about poker players submitting to drug testing. I can't help but wonder if there's a connection there somewhere. However, I really don't see a problem if they did decide to play poker at the olympics. I think in most of the major sports these days the olympics has been largely superceded by other contests (I notice that the olympic soccer is basically an under 23 tournament), so I suppose they have to keep some kind of a tenuous hold on relevance somewhere.

Do they play chess at the olympics?

Or darts or snooker

You get this exciting stuff on the Eurosport channel.

I watched a thing on PBS tonight about the differences between our games and the original ones - wow!

That thing on their site "Poker Played in Ancient Games?" reminds me of how the 5 ring logo was made - in the Olympics that Hitler/germany hosted, they had a lot of propoganda - supposedly German archeologists found that symbol at Olympia, but they planted it. The torch relay used to happen too, but not at the olympics - it was how they kept the same sacrificial fire burning at the different temples - it had to all be the same fire... Go Prometheus!

I thought it was kind of funny that in the first games Britain disqualified 2 of their own bike riders because they worked for the foreign ministry or something... It was pretty cool seeing the line-up of all those guys on a dirt track with brakeless fixed gears...

They had a lot of stories from ancient times about people getting killed at the Olympics too - I guess their boxing and wrestling matches were a lot harsher than ours - it was 'glory or death' - no silver, no bronze, no 'personal best'. I guess there were a lot of stories of boxers going home who's mothers didn't even recognise them... Guys winning bouts posthumously...

I wonder how many poker players go home that F'd up? Probably a fair amount since money is usually involved....

Or darts or snooker.

Things like chess, golf, darts and snooker aren't actually bad games to play (even though I suck at them). They just aren't particularly exciting to watch. I'd rather turn the sports channel off and find something else to do.

The rings on the Olympic flag represent the 5 continents linked together as one, not an ancient symbol at all more internet myths.

Uh, not an internet myth, a PBS documentary... The Germans set up a fake dig and 'found' the rings and that was the first use of them I guess... The ancient greeks knew the world was round, but didn't know there were seven continents.

I pointed out how stupid showing poker on ESPN was once, and the response I got was "I suppose they've got to have something on in the middle of the day."

That's ridiculous. They can always show football! ESPN almost never plays the football games. I have to watch them on the Spanish channel, and then it's just the South American leagues. What about MLS and FIFA? You can't tell me that subscribers would want to watch poker over football.
