Texas - Houston Area - country roads toward Fulshear

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I went out to Richmond to ride with a friend this morning. We rode through some nice country roads headed to Fulshear. I was amazed with the shear numbers of rodies out in that part of Houston. There were country roads with picturesque landscape. We ended riding 30 miles, but the experience was unbelievable. Any body else had a chance to ride the roads in this area?

PS - The ride the Bend charity ride covers this same area next weekend, so I am convinced that I will ride it next weekend.

I grew up in Katy, so I've been down a number of those roads. There's some nice riding out there. A friend of mine from Sugarland was telling me about that ride today. It sounds like a nice one so I'll probably be down there for it next weekend.

If you think that there are a lot of roadies there now, just wait till february when Ms150 training is in full swing. I participate in the conoco phillips training series. take a look at all the rides we did last year with a 1000 participants each week.

As a Sugar Land native, I frequent the roads surrounding Fulshear quite often. It's a very good area, wide shoulders, plenty of gas stations, very tolerant traffic. What it lacks in elevation, it makes up for with wind. Since it's basically flat farmland the winds can present quite a challenge.
I will be at Bike the Bend (http://www.ftbendliteracy.org/) next weekend. If you see a guy on a black CAAD9 with a black Toupe saddle say hi.

We were out there this weekend riding the Independence Ride out of Wallis. The area from Fulshear to Katy, to San Felipe, to Wallis, Orchard, Simonton, Richmond, etc. just has a ton of great roads to ride with mostly nice shoulders and very tolerant traffic. I think the locals recognize how much economic benefit we bring to their area when they see us in their gas stations and restaurants during and after the ride. It isn't uncommon to see 50+ riders at the Shell at 1093 and 359 in Fulshear most weekends at any given time in the morning. My favorite is still the Bois d Arc Loop off of 1093. It is such a beautiful little area with almost no traffic to speak of.

Where do you park for these rides?

Out there every weekend.
There's a parking lot on NW corner of Grand Parkway/Morton Rd and I've seen people park at the Fulshear City Hall if you want to start out there.

We usually park either at Katy High School at the intersection of FM 1463 and Hwy 90, or down at the METRO park and ride lot in Fulshear at the intersection of FM1093 and FM359. You can also start from Katy Mills Mall or several little parking lots along FM359 in Brookshire.

For those closer to Sugar Land, there is also Foster High School on FM 359 and FM 723 just past Pecan Grove. Closer to Pecan Grove, I typically park in the Randall's parking lot and have never had an issue. Then you can add a few more miles to get to Fulshear.

Is that the one just south of the Shell station on the corner?

I believe so. There is a Shell station, a Mickey D's, and a Sweet Mesquite restaurant. Across the street is Pecan Grove Country Club. Randall's is on the same side as Pecan Grove on the corner of Plantation Dr. and FM 359.

Ok, thats not the one I was thinking of. One other place I thought of if you are coming up from Richmond/Rosenburg is the school outside of Orchard just north of the intersection of FM 1489 and Hwy 36. I have used it as a break point to stop and rest in the shade during the summer before, but haven't used it as a starting point.

hwy 90 can get kinda boring, but I generally take it to Brookshire, then cut north
Bridge just outside SFA state park.

Yeah, the Katy Prairie is not the place for hill training...but it is pretty to ride through if you get off the main highways and ride the smaller roads. If you want hills and beauty together, go ride near Washington on the Brazos State Park and Chappell Hill.

I will be out in Pecan Grove Sat for a ride. Should be much nicer weather than today. The bad news is my friend who was going to ride the Bike The Bend on Sunday has to work, so I will be riding solo. Sunday should be a nice for a 59 mile ride. :)
