Road Cycling - Entry level road bike for heavy rider

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi,
I need an entry level road bike (max $750-less would be better if at all possible) that would be durable enough for a 6'2" 260 lb rider. I have never ridden a road bike before. I was considering a trek 1000, but my lbs has a raleigh sport (steel frame) on sale for $400. What should I get.....I'm open to any brand...not just these two.

I'd say stick with steel. 2003 Bianchi Eros should run you about $800.. maybe even less. I demoed(sp?) the Eros but went with the Bianchi Veloce and costs about $400-$500 more than the Eros. Ride was just as good as the Veloce.

I just went to the Bianchi site to look at both bikes.....the veloce looks awesome in the Ferrari red color....I've fallen in love with that simple color scheme.....none of that cluttered two-tone stuff like other bike makers (Trek comes to mind)

Consider the Bianchi Volpe. It's designed less for speed than for durability, but it is still far quicker than an MTB or hybrid. Since you've never ridden a bike before, standard road gearing is going to leave you struggling on hills, and the Volpe's lower touring gearing will save your knees and keep you out longer.

I'm 6'3", 265 and ride a specialized seqoia and haven't had any problems with it carrying my weight. We don't have the best roads where I ride and it has survived 3500+ miles with no problems
Hi,
the most important thing is fit. Look at a bunch, pick the one that fits best. Jamis Aurora is also a possiblity.
