Hi There, well to be honest with you im not too happy withy my Leader, too much noise, dont feel that solid on this bike, the geometry may be a little off for me. I have a 2009 735 TR w a carbon fork, I have a chance to trade for a MASI Coltelo both pictures are attached which would you choose and why??

aero frames and risers seem so counter-intuitive to me. but I would go MASI all the way.

WOW 3 for 3 for MASI right away, that good huh??

Leukybear
11-15-09, 10:23 AM
Of course.

MASI bikes are quite nice, I have one and I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend it. That said, it has to be pointed out that the current line of MASI bikes are in no way related to the MASI of old that has a strong cycling heritage. Another manufacturer simply bought the name

Nice what are you giving him in return?

Don;t tell me that;s your leader and you're gonna trade him that...... As the IRONY!>!>!>!>!

Not making any comment about either of those bikes, but comparing Masi to Leader is like Cadillac to Geo. Leaders suck.

I'm surprised so many Leader owners complaining about their bikes. Trying to steer my friend that wanted a raw 725TR to a different direction.

yes you are right!! still on CL, sooo keep your eyes open for me for my other trade options! lol

I've got nothing to trade except a couple handle bars :p

gah, my friend has an aerospoke, when people say that it's heavy, it's no exaggeration. i thought my hed3 on my road bike was hefty, but wow. it feels like the weight of a full wheelset crammed into one wheel. the one i tried was a front, so i don't know how that would be compared to a rear, but it felt stiff and once going had good momentum. killed steering response though, and it was still ponderously heavy.

not a fan of either the masi nor the leader. i mean, if i had a choice between the two at the same price, i'd go masi. but then i'd sell the spok for a used phil wheelset, and probably sell the frame and add a hundred or so for some vivalo, samson, etc.

and don't compare this masi to the legendary italian brand. that would be like comparing BD merciers to the mercier of old. decent bike, but totally disconnected from the heritage.

LupinIII

it's always nice to see people riding kilos and fuji tracks saying leaders are cheap garbage.

leaders, like kilos and whatever, are just entry level. it's just the owners have the ability to spend jackass amounts of money building them up.

I love my leader, 09' 725tr. I think it's a nicely responsive frame, stiff, pretty durable.
At the same time I don't think it's of the quality of a $700 frame, but who would.
And still at the same time I think it's a nice frame for it's cost.

I would at least ride that masi before trading for it. Cause really it looks like to be of the same quality as the leader. And it weighs 5.3lbs, which isn't exactly light. Actually its about as heavy as my 80's conversion, I think heavier than the leader, which means low quality if you ask me.

LupinIII
11-16-09, 01:44 AM
atmo the masi is leader quality with an italian name slapped on.

but i like that green. it's nothing amazing though

glad you're happy with yours.

as you've pointed out, the brand name certainly recalls a italian thoroughbred heritage but has succumbed to the same fate as motobecane / windsor / mercier / etc...storied historical brands bought out by taiwanese conglomerate and reapplied to vastly less artisan modern products.

i wouldn't be surprised if the two bikes (masi / leader) were made in the same factory. as the much less wordy poster previous to me has so nicely summarized (while i was typing this): similar product / different sticker. don't kid yourself that the masi is so vastly superior.

elTwitcho
11-16-09, 08:35 AM
atmo the masi is leader quality

similar product

I'm not sure where that conclusion is coming from.

A cursory look at the welds is enough to see a difference between the two frames. The steel frames have welds that are about as good as they get for TIG welded bikes. Have you guys actually seen both frames in person?

dookie
11-16-09, 09:15 AM
yes, i've seen both...though i am far more familiar with masi. yes, i would agree that there is a difference. my point was, mass-production robot-welded alloy vs. mass-production robot-welded alloy does not equate to a night/day difference.

masi is 7005 t6 double butted tubing...nice aluminum. leader says only double butted, so who knows? my wife's BD windsor is 7005/kinesis DB with perfectly reasonable welds...which is my point again.

hey, i'm not knocking inexpensive asian fabrication...i love my maxway-built sputnik. you get a lot of value for the dollar. all i'm saying is that masi >>>>>> leader is an exaggeration. i'll concede masi > leader.

masi has been bought by haro if I remember correctly. for the years 2001-2005 they just liscensed the name and then eventually just bought it out right. If my memory serves right.

dude what are you smoking??? masi coltello w/o a DOUBT.

LupinIII
11-16-09, 07:48 PM
leader welds are fine. try welding aluminum, large beads just come with the material being non-ferrous.

as said, they're all robot welded taiwanese frames, the quality difference is nigh on negligible. go with whichever geometry or color you prefer really if they're equal pricing to you.

didn't know that? i was wondering why you were bringing up the hertiage and whatnot when this bike has none.

it's just like the motobecanes from BD, just a classic name licensed to taiwanese aluminum. though BD is selling them for a good price, the masi is much more espensive than it should be atmo

im not trying to start a ****storm but i would like to say some thing that tzusing of h+son said earlier over on tarckbike.com..

the way people automatically bash taiwanese products in favor of "superior" japanese and italian craftsmanship is demeaning and not necessarily accurate at all. taiwanese products can be just as good as small-scale builders' products, and taiwanese welders are some of the most skilled in the world. i do agree that masis aren't good, because they're catalog bikes - but to say bad craftsmanship is standard taiwanese fare is a really broad statement that isn't accurate by any stretch.

im not saying theres anything wrong with taiwanese products but that a masi is as italian as a mercier is french.
