Hi all, this isn't another newbie looking for ideas for a new bike. I know exactly what I want and cannot find it. After doing much research here is what I'm looking for:

- Steel frame
- Must have a front double crankset
- 105 or better
- Mavic cosmos or better
- Under $1600

I was looking at an 04' Jamis quest that my LBS was going to do a triple to double swap for me but Jamis is out of 04's and no 05's until November. Do I wait until November or is there something out there that I cannot find?

Thx

Well here is what I ordered and I am picking up tomorrow at the LBS.

'04 Specialized Allez Comp Cr-Mo Double

Full Ultegra double component set. No 105 mix.
Full Carbon fork
Carbon Seat Post
Shimano R540 wheelset (comparable to cosmos, but I may upgrade to something better)

$1425.00 from my LBS ($1499 was their normal price, $1630 list).

I also considered a Orbea Zona which would of been same price range.

I have looked at that bike but the Shimano 540 turns me off.

I guess I should also include my riding stats. I go about 12 - 15 miles per night in a hilly area. I'm 6' 210 lbs. I have broken 3 spokes and had 5 flats in the past 4 months so I want a bombproof wheelset.

I would prefer the Mavic Elites. Does anyone know which Bontrager wheel is equivalent to the Elite?

I agree the cosmos are touted as being pretty bomb proof...FWIW I think a set can be had around the ~$300 mark? I've yet to decide what to upgrade to, but am thinking of one of the velocity wheelsets.

If you have a pretty hilly area, are you sure you don't want a triple?

I have a triple on my current bike and have never used to small front gear in four years, plus they are hard as hell to adjust correctly anyway. My riding partner just bought a new Trek 1200 wiht a triple and cannot get all three gears either. Most doubles are around 53-39 and I would be getting a 12-25 or 12-27 cassette. So with a gear ratio of 39-27 = 1.44 you could just about climb any road out there. To me triples might be necessary off road, but never on road. Just my O though!

I wouldn't discount those wheels or that bike. My primary training partner rides that bike and he is a bigger bloke than you (6'3" & 210 lbs). He has never had a problem with anything on the bike and loves it.

You haven't met the right hill yet ... they're out there.
