headset (what you can't see from the picture...): caged bearings, crown race has the <C> stamped between "Campagnolo and patent" on the edge that rests on the fork, but the <C> appears nowhere else on any part. '1" X 24 TPI ENGLAND Made in Italy' stamped on the inside of the adjustable race and the underside of the lock nut. top of the lock says CAMPAGNOLO twice, between "Italy and Patent," with no lines in between the text. the collar that sets into the frame of the upper head tube race says the same, with lines in between. You can see the outer edges of the bottom head tube race and the adjustable say CAMPAGNOLO ITALY BREV with no <C>.

I'm pretty sure it's not mis-matched, and would like to know it's birth year

ID'ing it is easy: Record/Nuovo Record

Year.....no clue

I too believe it's Record, but I'm not sure if it's pre-1967 or not... It's age is my concern. This thing is used by at least 500 miles on my part, who knows how many came before me. I'm jaw-dropped at how amazing the bearings and races look factory new.

No.

Is it safe to say it's 1970-'72?

It looks more like N.R. and thus later than 70-72

Supposedly Campy switched from 'Patent' to 'Brev' sometime around '78 or so....

Could be as young as 1973.
I have a bike with a 1973 ensemble, and it came with that style of headset.

I also bought in 1974 new, one with the <c> in a box. Those things did not have model years you know...

this is why I am questioning things. I have one that I know is a 1971. It has the <C> on the outer ring of the lower head tube race.

and to further confuse, in an effort to save money sometimes the factory would mix and match...

what size is is the crown race? about how much are you looking to get for it?

Yes it is safe to say it is 1968-1973ish... someone might chime in and flame me on the 1968... check the lock-nut it should have dashes on it. That headset is worth $100 easily in half way decent condition.

BTW, I don't think it is mismatched.

There are several important indicators. The <c> on the exposed part of the lower cup is one, the dashes on the locknut is another. Additionally, on the early adjustable cups of this style you can see more clearly the machining marks for the 8 sides wrench flats, those machining marks are not evident on later headsets.

As an aside yous appears to have the straight profile with ridge crown race as opposed to the rounded profile with no ridge so 1970ish to 1973/4 is probably a safe bet.

I figured it was worth a bit, but I was thinking $80.00. Most of my Campagnolo collection is going to sale, I'm sad to say...

crown is 26mm (approx. 1" 1/32) interior diameter

thank you for your input. I wish I had waited to post the auction. I didn't think to put a reserve on it, and I'm probably going to lose it for $10

I have a similar headset that I'd like to know more about. Is there a good site with reference photos for different Campy parts? Old catalogs are hard to come by.

Right here....post it up the main C&V section versus this sub-forum.

Then cancel your auction and repost it with a starting price of say $50. Forget about a reserve, that just ticks off bidders. If you think it will have limited interest, just start it at a price acceptable to you and somewhat below market, say $50. Or put it with a buy it now of $100. If you see similar items have gotten a lot of interest, start it at 99 cents, and let the bidding begin. I usually get more starting an item at 99 cents vs a high starting price. But I get hosed if it is an item with limited interest.

Can you cancel an e-bay auction? I thought you couldn't... maybe I'm wrong.

I'm trying to keep a positive mental attitude, however in my original post, I think I was being too cynical. There's three days left, and some people watching. I'm just worried they're only watching it to see how little I get for the thing. Lesson learned. As I (begrudgingly) auction the rest of my collection, I'll probably try a "buy it now" scenerio.

You can cancel an auction up to a certain time before auction end without any penalties or fees. Alot of times bidders dont bid because they're hoping to get a deal.....along with 20 other bidders. I wouldnt be surprised if there're alot of 'snipe' bids on it. You should be able to 'modify' your auction if there haven't been any bids placed.
