For the last year I have been fighting a come and go pain in my right foot. I would take it easy for a while, then when I felt better get right back into the gym. I have had multiple x-rays and none of the Dr's have seen anything wrong. Today the podiatrist used an ultra sound machine and found a stress fracture in the first metatarsal. So now I have six to eight weeks in a soft cast to let it mend. I am just relieved to know what is wrong.

Did the US hurt really bad?

The ultra sound was painless, until she pressed hard on the fracture for a second. Like I said I am just glad to know what is wrong so I can get better.

Must have been some low wattage. I've heard storys of people doing ultra sound and the patients scream in pain due to not ramping up intensity slowly.

I design and work on ultra sound diagnostic equipment and it does not cause pain.
If it is defective it might. Most of the high power wands are water cooled and will burn the patient if the system is dry or broken. Ultra sound is not like sticking your hand in the microwave. Diagnostic ultrasound poses no known risks to patients, unlike x-rays or MRI's.
I'm glad that you finally figured out what is wrong, so that you/they know what you need to do to make it stop hurting.
I had a hairline fracture in my foot most of an entire American football season in high school (back in the dark-ages) ;). I would re-injure it every 2-3 weeks, and it hurt like hell! After football season was over, I was able to do stuff like swim (with it wrapped to be immobile), and use resistance/weight equipment at the gym to keep from losing a lot of my muscle-tone. Hope you feel better fast.

Exercise is going to be key. I get bored with weights so I am really going to have to stay focused. Use the machines and keep at it until the foot gets better. I have lost so much weight by staying at it in the gym and aerobic classes. I just need to convince my neighbor to install a heated indoor pool that I can use for the next 4 months of winter.....
