The number one rule of track bike riding is:

Ride within your limits. If you are in a race and don't feel comfortable, it's for a reason! Take your time, leave it to the professionals, some day you WILL feel comfortable enough to go all out and take risks.

The number one rule of bike mechanics is:

Fix within your limits. If you are in need of maintenance/advanced work and don't feel comfortable, it's for a reason! Take your time, leave it to the professionals, some day you WILL feel comfortable enough to do anything you want.

Until then, QUIT FUNKING WHINING ABOUT SCREWING UP YOUR BIKE WHEN YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

sheesh..

I will second this. There is a wealth of info in this forum - people only need to use the "SEARCH" option before asking a question OR proceeding with an unfamiliar task. As far as shanking your goods due to neophyte status - it is your money, make sure you know what you want to accomplish and then consult the Manufacturer's website (or here) to gain insight on the proper methods/tools/experience required for each task. Think "caveat" when approaching an unfamiliar task. If you do not know how to snug a looseball headset, read up. If you do not want to attempt it but are trying for a cheap fix - you get what you pay for.

tis a shame...but I understand the excitement one feels when building up a bike. Careful of what you take on during a learning stage. Better to crush a set of Sovos than do the same to Phils.

I have no way of controlling what people post here; obviously there are poeple who find value in it though. I don't.

People really don't search the forums enough - there have been way too many, "I'm new to fixed, etc, etc." Not to rain on yer parade or anything but the bottom line is:

THE SEARCH FUNCTION IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Less talk, more riding.

All the tech stuff has already been covered. We only post new and fun insults. With Karstens back from that little tugboat we should have more degradation and and **** slinging than we've seen in months. Welcome back Tugboat Willy!

bah. people come here to post crap. they all have slightly different needs. unless you write a book that covers all these needs and they know about it and read it you will have them post here. of course, if such a book existed why would anyone post here if they actually wanted to learn something about repairs.
i think such books do exist... so

it's id's fault!

well, there would be model merits to talk about.. but an online encyclopedia could be made for that...

so yeah, it's still id's fault.

typing well and spelling well are not the same issues at all. a dictionary will not fix bad dexterity.

also.. how would i look up the words if i don't know how to spell?

Lurking on this board made me decide to go ahead and take the leap into riding fixed. And I'm glad that I did. Thanks for fielding all my newbie questions! So far I still have all of my fingers. And I only lube my chain when I'm drunk!

Sure you don't have too to post here but point bieng the BF has a great number of forums in it and I think a bunch of us who have been here awhile notice that the same sht different day themes come up often in forums that they don't belong. What-a-ya gonna do?

yeah that was beyond ridiculous. colors of messenger bags???, next it'll be outfit coordination, should i wear my grey ben davis with my black carhardtt's with the hole in the ass, or should i just wear my old pabst t-shirt with those cut-off army pants. do you think i should wear my pabst buckle with that or my milwaukie buckle. too much pabst logo may look too coordinated.

I'll be the first to admit, I screwed up a hub my first time out as well, and I *****ed about it here. But i learned my lesson --- leave it to the pros. Fish is right. Eventually you'll be comfortable enough to do it yourself (and i am, put a new 15t cog on today, slick as **** no problems). But realizing my chain was now wayy too long, i went to the LBS for some advice.

You'd be suprised how quick a collegiate track rider (and mechanic) can look at your bike, ignore what you're saying, and show figure out what's wrong, throw it on the stand, and show you how to fix it. All you have to do is ask nicely. LBS guys can be great. Maybe i'm luckie to have a fixie specific mechanic right at my fingertips, lucky to have 3 years free maintenance on my bike at the LBS, lucky they'd take the time to help me out (they were packed) -- but i'm from cowtown -- if i can find a wrench to help me out, you can too. Even with fixies. Heed Fish's advice. Heck, make this thread a sticky.

That being said, i wish i could push 54x14 (like the mechanic). Lousy weak legs and lungs.
