Is there a down side on keeping the adapter installed while riding? My pump is set up for schraeder only.

Not that I ever noticed.

There are plastic ones that will save you at least 2-9g over the brass adaptor. A definite must!!

True, but a brass one can be melted down and forged into a spare link if needed. +1 for emergency preparedness! ;)

Okay MacGyver, do you cast parts on the trail?

I'd be worried about affecting the balance of the wheels. No go in my opinion.

There's no downside at all, but I would keep the presta valve closed until you need to air up.

install the adapter somewhere else? if there's a screw somewhere on the bike that can be substituted with a longer one so some threads protrude, then screw the adapter to that. you might already have enough threads protruding somewhere.

or put a screw through a chainstay or seatstay fender mounting hole with the adapter as the nut. lots of possibilities.

Change the pump to presta. You pump up your car tires with the same pump?

Exactly! That's what I did on one of my bikes in case I ever needed to pump up a tire at a gas station. The Presta thread is and oddball one and you won't find any screws on your bike with that same thread. However, I did find I was able to thread the adapter on to the end of a clamp-on FD cable guide screw, even though the pitch was a bit different.
