i purchased a used road bike that came with a computer, which appears to be broken. the timer works, but nothing else does (average speed, mph, distance travelled, etc.). obviously, i didn't get a manual with it. is there any way i can troubleshoot the thing, or will i have to get a new one? if i need a new one, how much will that cost?

Try reset?
What brand and model? Many manufacturers have an online pdf user guide, that may be of help. Look at these vendors to start with:
Nashbar (http://www.nashbar.com/results.cfm?category=82&subcategory=1035&storetype=&estoreid=&init=y&pagename=)

Performance (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/category_computers.cfm)

Look thru these and ask more specific questions. Tons of choices, depending on your needs and budget.

You can find a new computer for as low as 15 bucks with those functions. I paid 30 for a wirless and returned it a week later because it was reading incorrect speeds. I got a Vetta for 25 dollars and it has worked fine for me.
You want to get the magnet as close as you can to the sensor, for a good reading. Does the MPH say zero, or is it blank?
