Southeast - VA cyclists: write to Sec'y Homer NOW in support of bike-ped funding

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Fellow Cyclists and Bike-Ped Advocates,

To deal with severely declining revenues, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) have decided to give priority to bike-ped projects over other projects that normally get Transportation Enhancements (TE) funding, such as visitors' centers and museums.

This is very good news for us. But unfortunately, when the public comment period was open, the CTB received very few comments from bike-ped advocates, while the museum folks, etc., got their two cents in. If we don't act NOW to support the CTB's decision, they may be forced to rethink it.

So before the workday is over today, please write a letter in support of the CTB's decision to give priority to bike-ped projects. Send it to Secretary of Transportation Pierce Homer (pierce.homer@governor.virginia.gov (mailto:pierce.homer@governor.virginia.gov)), who is chairman of the CTB. Your letter can go something like this:

Secretary Homer and Members of the Commonwealth Transportation Board:

I support the recommended changes to prioritize Transportation
Enhancement funds for the completion of core bike and pedestrian
transportation projects across the Commonwealth.

I am very pleased, as well, with the recommendation to prioritize
preservation of rail corridors by funding rail-to-trail and
rail-with-trail projects.

Sincerely,

Your name and address

Bike-ped lobbyist Bud Vye will attend the CTB meeting on Thursday, to make an appeal in person. But it's very important that we have your support too. Please take the time to write, and please forward this message.

Thanks,

Thanks everyone for filling up Secretary Homer's inbox! He was very complimentary of bike advocates, and the changes for TE funding policy to give priority to bike-ped projects were passed by the CTB unanimously.

We can make a difference!
