Bicycle Mechanics - Using a road crankset on the track, different forces?

Hello Mechanics!

Quick question,

I am curious to know if a road double crankset will hold up just as well as a single ring track crankset for fixed riding on the velodrome. I would have thought that as long as the chainline is perfect, there would be no difference, but then I thought that the inner ring may decrease the force on the crankset.

Any opinions?

sorry, forgot to say I will be using lightweight alu CNC'd road cranks!

i did search but i think using a light crank makes a difference.

If you want to use a track-style 1/8" chain, you'll need a compatible chainring. The ones on a road double crankset are NOT compatible. If you don't mind using a more narrow chain, you'll be fine. Note that I have no idea if this is "legal" or not for velodrome use. They may have restrictions on what equipment can be used as track equipment is built for strength more so than lightweight.

I don't know what make and model crank you have but many boutique CNC cranks developed a bad reputation for cracking and other catastrophic failure. The makers had more knowledge of CNC set up then the did of metallurgy. There are good reasons many of them are no longer available.

In all seriousness, as long as it's a good crankset to begin with, and not prone to catastrophic failure under any user, you should be ok.
