I just got a beautiful mutt (beagle/lab/terrier/chihuahua and probably much more). She's a little under 20 pounds. I'm looking for a good bag to use to carry her short distances on my bike. I've put her in my BaileyWorks messenger bag a couple of times, but she was awfully squirmy and I'm not sure that a mess bag is secure enough to transport a dog. What say you guys? Anyone here carry dogs in messenger bags or backpacks, and if so which style and/or brand?
Thanks!

Never carried a dog on my bike, but one time I had to get the dog to the vet and walking was the only option. I have a large backpack with a drawstring top and flap. GH Bass I believe, I got it at a puppet festival in 1999. I just plunked the pup in there, a Parsons Jack terrier, and I put it on backwards so it was on my front, and he loved it. The pack was just tall enough that he could put his rear paws on the bottom and his front paws on the lip of the backpack. He loved getting the "big dog" eye view as I walked down the street. The only problem was when he realized the destination. ;)

i have a miniature dachshund who fits in my chrome citizen mess bag. it works ok for short trips but he doesn't seem to like it all that much. he's also significantly smaller than your dog (10 lbs).
i've been looking into getting one of these things:

Thanks for mentioning the Outward Hound bag. I'm going to check that out.

My Havanese weighs about 15 lbs and I take him almost everywhere with me via bike. However, I don't carry him on my body or bike but rather in a trailer. I find it safer for us both since his shifting around in the trailer doesn't affect my handling of the bike. Plus, I get the added bonus of having extra space in the trailer for cargo when needed.
Attached is a photo of Pepper riding behind my DH in one of his first trailer rides.

I agree a trailer is best. I recently got one, mostly for cargo, as my kids are big now. I don't know if I can fit either of my dogs in it, but I plan to try it. I have two greyhounds. They weigh 57 and 73 pounds, but they're quite tall and long. Here they are, occupying a whole couch.

Burley Trailer far safer, easier and more enjoyable for both of you (Children have been killed from falling over in those child sets that mount on the bike) My dog loved it, it was cargo type but I definitley think kid type is better

Great looking dogs. Are they race track rescues?

Yes, as far as I know, the only greyhounds you can get are retired racers. The industry is "closed" and they release greyhounds after they're fixed, so you can't get puppies or breed.
Red, the big one, was a flunkie. He entered one race and stopped in the backstretch, and they retired him right away. He isn't energetic. We've had him since he was two, and he's eight now.
Waffle raced until almost five years old and won a great deal and was rated a AA champion. We got her about 18 months ago.
