I like the new changes made to BF. Is the server faster too?

Personally, I don't care for it too much. Maybe I'm just too nitpicky, but I think a hosting web site should be 99.9999% up. If one of my customers experienced the type of downtime BF has had, they would escalate to senior management and raise a big stink. They complain even when getting 6 packets dropped out of 6 million .... 0.0001% downtime.

There are some nice things in the new setup I however don't like the fact that each thread/post takes so much vertical real estate. It almost necessitates some scrolling in order to see all the updated threads. I usually prefer more condensed presentations where I can quickly scan a lot of info in one glance.
There's also a problem with threads that have more than 6 pages, the last button is missing.

It's also not using near enough smart use of white space and is too busy. I really liked the very simple old layout. This one is atrocious.

But at least the icons and buttons are super giant sized now! That's what I really wanted in Bike Forums; Giant icons and round rectangle buttons. Just line theway they did it in 1993! Now if we could just get animated gif graphics it would be perfect.

I Spy (click on it right below the M in BikeForums at the top of the page.) is pretty cool. It is a real time update of latest threads. Kind of like Twitter.

But...

+1 on icons are too big

+1 on too much wasted space.

It kind of looks like AOL circa 1996

How do you guys navigate from the end of a thread back to the Norcal board? You have to scroll all the way up?

There is a "Quick Navigation" button in the lower right that will get you back to the NoCal forum.

Definitely a great big Meh has been heard around the world today.

It seems they tried to fix something that wasn't broken. I agree that it takes up way too much vertical real estate and the use of white space is odd.

FWIW, if you guys want to register your apathy/anger/boredom with the change or report any bugs you find, it would be a great help to post in the thread on the subject here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?603776-Welcome-to-the-New-Bikeforums-net-Announcement-and-Technical-Issues-Thread). Thanks!

No thanks.... I'm more of a behind the scenes ***** disturber. :)

Actually - I just browsed that thread, and all my complaints have already been voiced - in spades. 'Scuse me now, I have to go rest my eyes. For some reason they are aching pretty badly.

Great job BBM, your new signature takes up a third of my screen vertically. The entire post takes 2/3 of the screen.

You were quick to adopt to the new style.

The NoSquint Add-on for FireFox is really nice. You can change the background colors, font colors, and sizes. Using this dramatically reduced the headache and made it a lot easier to read.

However, there's still way too much white space and vertical scrolling needed. And those envelope icons....yuck. Yes, I posted something similar to the other thread x...

How do you guys navigate from the end of a thread back to the Norcal board? You have to scroll all the way up?

There is a top button right now that will bounce you bup to the top of the thread, and we'll be adding a link back to the main page at the bottom soon, hopefully tomorrow or so.

We'll be fine tuning things for a bit as we go along.

Yeah on the old layout I could see 20 threads before needing to scroll down. In the new layout with the exact same browser window I can only see 8.5 threads. Yes each thread now takes up space that I need to measure in fractions of a thread!

Edit: I've been on the other side of this (upgrading stuff, users hate it) so I understand the pain of such a process for the admins. Still gotta vent though ;)

The two big "Reply to Thread" buttons at the top and bottom are redundant. We have the "quick reply" and "go advanced" buttons for that.

... and the "user online" PNG file is 3KB. Pretty wasteful when just highlighting the username in red does just fine.

Now it takes something like three pages.

made ya look:lol: Ya did.

Not at all unusual in an "upgrade"Sure isn't. It's unfortunate that an upgrade making something more efficient, faster, lighter, smoother, and more usable is such a rarity that it's amusing to even mention it.

Heh - if they're stupid enough to give up all that real estate for nonsense, I won't be the only one. :)

Even so - I like you, so if you want, it's gone. Let me know......

I liked the old signature much much better. The bike blessed by the Pope and costing more than a divorce made me laugh every time I saw it.

But you know, with the new BF World Order, you have plenty of space to fit both the new and the old signatures.

So if we keep scrolling down, down, down into the infinite whiteness, we'll eventually find the door back to the real world?

What about an iphone? All you see is a blank screen. Great dead pixel detector! :thumb:

Just kidding. I tried it on the iphone it works pretty good, very easy to read even in portrait mode, much better than the old format.

The thing at the bottom is a drop-down box, which is terribly annoying to use at the end of each thread.

What's the significance with the color of the envelope icon. I've seen it gray, red, and I think blue at one time ...or am I color blind?

BlastRadius
11-21-09, 07:53 AM
I think
Gray = thread with low view and/or reply count
Blue = thread with low view and/or reply count that you've replied in.
Red = thread with high view and/or reply count
