somebody in my area is selling a columbia road bike from the 80's. Are these any good, or are they a junk bike?

My first road bike, forget the color, think it was brown'ish, drop down handle bars, 10 or 12 speed I think?
Heavy, full of steel. Columbia made some decent department store bikes in the 80s. In my case the chain was always lose and skipped but a friend of mine (we bought it together) never had the same problem. Don't remember much else but I would imagine it isn't worth much these days. If it's cheap, go for it.

My first bike was a blue and white Columbia singlespeed cruiser that my parents bought for me one Christmas from Sears. That was the bike I learned to ride on and I even took the training wheels off of it myself. Sadly it was stolen not too long afterwards. :( The frame was heavy but solid and it was reliable as it was a simple singlespeed with coaster brakes. Anyways, I did recall seeing some Columbia roadbikes in the mid-80s but they seemed only slightly better than the Roadmasters I saw at Target and K-Mart. I guess I might have ranked them somewhere in quality with Ross bicycles.

The one my dad had was junk. I don't think it was from the 80's though, it was newer(is that a word?) than that. I was tightening the cable hanger bolt for the centerpull brakes and it sheared right off. Thats when I noticed that all the parts were so pathetically cheap that we ended up trashing it for fear it would cause an accident. imo I would look for something else...
