Hi Nepa - welcome to the boards.

I can't speak for everyone but I think most people who ride XC wear clipless pedals. The main reason I wear them is efficiency (able to maximize pedal strokes) and the ability to 'toss' my bike around. If you've never tried them, I suggest you do - you'll never go back (although I do use platform bmx-style wellgo B37s for around town).

Most serious cyclists use clipless pedals. If they don't, they're generally:

A: Riding in a fashion where a repeatable efficient pedal stroke is not necessary, e.g. trials, urban, dirt jumping, dh/freeride
B: Working much harder than they need to
C: Scared
D: Multiples of the above.

I have size 13 feet, never could fit properly into a toe clip. Clipless is lighter.

It's all about "cadence" .... I concentrate on the up-stroke rather than the down-stroke (which comes naturally). It just about doubles your stroke power, honest.... I'm giving away some of my racing secrets here simply because @ 42 I don't race anymore.

Well i always knew that pulling up on the pedals would maximise your efficiancy (i dont know how to spell it) but I didnt think it would make that much of a difference. I tried my friends and its great, but i was riding on a paved road. Ide like to try them out on a simple trail before considering buying them.
