i know this isn't exactly a fixie/ss question but you guys are obviously the most knowledgable regarding urban biking.

im going to nyc to chill with some buddies for a few weeks. i figure itd be a good idea to bike around instead of waste money on a car. any ideas on what i should do for a serious bike to rent?

i already know city riding, but anyone have any important things to note?

if you're sticking around in the city, inc/ the boroughs, i wouldn't think you'd need a car or a bike, since walking around in the different neighborhoods here is probably one of the best things to do here, either as a local or tourist. trains are very easy. but as you know, plenty people here don't have cars.

don't know about renting any decent bikes in NYC, but may want to consider a craigslist ad seeking to rent/borrow someone else's bike for a couple days, esp. from someone with a quality beater in their stable. perhaps even barter something instead of paying cash to rent. and if cash strapped but still paying cash to rent, maybe offer an ipod, discman, etc. as collateral. just a thought . . . . basically, if you seemed nice, and i had a quality beater, i'd consider helping you out.

Gotham bikes on W. B'way has Bianchi Milanos for rent, not sure what it costs, but would be fun to cruise around on. Really though, if you actually want to see the sights, you might be better off just hoofing it and taking the train. It's really easy to get around ny on foot.
